NEC Electronics announced today that it has developed a new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for DVD writers. The SCOMBO 8 integrates DVD drive control logic, synchronous DRAM, and flash memory all in a compact 14mm square flat package. It is also the first DVD controller to support 24x DVD recording and uses 50% less power than NEC's previous products when writing at 8x.

A simple title printed in normal mode will typically take a couple of minutes. A fuller disc image will take approximately 15-20 minutes. By downloading and installing this free software, users can connect a digital device such as a camcorder or digital camera to their PC and burn videos or photos directly to DVD in real-time.
To use TruDirect, you will need to update the firware of your drive. The SH-S223Q and SH-S223F will need to be updated to firmware version SB03 or higher. The SH-S222A and SH-S222L can also be used with TruDirect by updating the firmware to SB01. However, this firmware does not seem to be available yet. Once the firware is updated, you can then install the TruDirect software which can be downloaded here.
