According to DigiTimes, the company recently purchased molds for DVD-ROM drives and DVD burners from Asustek's optical disc drive business and has already secured an OEM order for DVD-ROM drives from Pioneer.
Quanta Storage, the largest Taiwan-based maker of slim-type optical disc drives, has purchased molds for half-height (H/H) DVD drives from the optical disc drive business unit of Asustek Computer in order to step into production of H/H DVD-ROM drives and DVD burners for use in desktop PCs, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Just in time for Christmas, Verbatim will present a recordable BD-R 2x Dual Layer with 50GB of storage capacity with 2x burning rate. The new Verbatim Blu-ray Disc is suitable for recording films in high definition, backing up large amounts of office data and the long-term archiving of photos and music. The Verbatim BD-R 2x DL 50GB is now available in stores in a 5-pack jewel case and a 10-disc spindle.
Verbatim’s new Blu-ray disc offers, with 50GB of storage capacity, space for up to 270 minutes (MPEG2) of entertainment in HD-quality for the whole family. The burning time takes 93 minutes. According to DigiTimes, BTC has decided to shut down the loader and own-brand marketing businesses due to the global financial crisis.
BTC used to be a global top ODD OEM maker, but stopped business operations in 2006 mainly because the company was unable to solve patent problems, the sources indicated. However, BTC continued to produce ODD loaders as well as marketing own-brand ODDs in Taiwan and China. Under the negative impact of the global financial crisis, BTC is unable to maintain both the loader and own-brand marketing businesses, the sources pointed out.
