Western Digital, the world's leader in digital storage solutions, has announced that it is offering to customers of its WD Sentinel DX4000 storage server an offsite data storage service that improves data protection for the small business owners who rely on WD Sentinel to protect their precious business information. WD partnered with KeepVault®, which was recently added to the AuthenTec® line of services, to serve WD's Sentinel small office storage server customers.

WD Sentinel storage servers act as an on-site cloud storage solution for small to medium-sized businesses (SMB). The addition of KeepVault provides an integrated offsite backup solution for SMBs' most important information, providing secure offsite disaster protection. The service integrates seamlessly into the administration dashboard and the user can choose to compress and or encrypt data while backing it up to the cloud, allowing for improved data transfers with increased security. Data from WD Sentinel can be backed-up to KeepVault either real time or as per a user-defined backup schedule and the administrator can choose to throttle the bandwidth to manage network performance, thus providing the SMB a hands-free, peace-of-mind off-site data protection system.

"In the event of a natural or man-made disaster, an SMB could lose everything if its place of business were compromised," said Thomas Gallivan, vice president of marketing for WD's SMB solutions group. "By adding KeepVault to the WD Sentinel product, we have provided our customers with an additional tool for protecting their businesses with a system that provides seamless backup and full data restoration, ensuring that an SMB has the insurance to get their business up and running in the event of a crisis."

wd logo.jpgWestern Digital Corp. today reported that it has reached an agreement with Toshiba Corporation to divest certain assets to address the requirements of regulatory agencies that have conditionally approved or are continuing to review the company's planned acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST). The asset package covered by the agreement will enable Toshiba to manufacture and sell 3.5-inch hard drives for the desktop and consumer electronics markets and will enhance its ability to manufacture and sell 3.5-inch hard drives for near-line (business critical) applications. The divestiture transaction is subject to review by regulatory agencies in certain jurisdictions.

WD also reported that it has agreed, subject to completion of the divestiture transaction, to purchase Toshiba Storage Device (Thailand) Company Limited (TSDT). TSDT manufactured hard drives but has not resumed operations after the recent Thailand flooding. The principal assets of TSDT are its Thailand property, facilities and employees. Subject to completion of the transaction, WD plans to integrate these facilities and employees into its Thailand operations. The financial terms of the two agreements were not disclosed.

The closing of the transactions with Toshiba is conditioned on WD's closing of its planned acquisition of HGST, which remains subject to several closing conditions, including the receipt of certain remaining antitrust approvals. Subject to obtaining these approvals, the company is targeting the transactions with Toshiba to close in March 2012.

Corporate and customer data are the lifeline of any company − to be safeguarded at all times and handled cautiously. Data breach trends and recent studies, such as the Ponemon Institute’s 2011 report, The State of USB Security, indicate that data breaches continue to occur far more frequently than they should and unsecured USB Flash drives remain a leading culprit. Additionally, failure to protect data can expose a company to a host of negative consequences including non-compliance, fines, financial loss and lack of customer confidence and trust.

greenliant_sata_nanadrive_ssd.jpgGreenliant Systems, a leader in energy-efficient, highly secure and reliable solid state storage products, has started mass production of its industrial grade SATA interface NANDrive solid state drives (SSDs). Operating at temperatures between -40 and +85 degrees Celsius, I-grade SATA NANDrive devices keep customer data safe while withstanding extreme environments.

The industrial grade SATA NANDrive is currently available in 2 GByte, 4 GByte and 8 GByte, with higher capacities planned. These products combine Greenliant’s internally developed NAND controller with single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash die for a fully integrated SSD in a multi-chip package. For applications requiring the endurance and speed of solid state storage in very small form factors, SATA NANDrive is one of the smallest SSDs at 14mm x 24mm x 1.95mm. Offered in a 145 ball grid array (BGA), 1mm ball pitch package for easy and firm mounting to a system motherboard, NANDrive is resistant to shock and vibration.

"The SATA NANDrive GLS85LS product family is backward compatible with the same pin-out across all capacities and temperature ranges — commercial and industrial — giving customers added flexibility when using solid state storage in their designs,” said Nobu Higuchi, vice president of application engineering and product marketing, Greenliant Systems. “Because NANDrive protects against frequent NAND flash changes, it is an ideal SSD for embedded applications that need long-term support, such as industrial single-board computers, robotics, automation and control, military and automotive."

Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc., today announced that the companies have entered into agreements to expand their NAND Flash memory joint venture relationship.

The agreements, which are designed to improve the flexibility and efficiency of the joint venture, include a NAND Flash supply agreement for Micron to supply NAND products to Intel and agreements for certain joint venture assets to be sold to Micron. Under terms of the agreement, Intel is selling its stake in two wafer factories in exchange for approximately $600 million—the approximate book value of Intel's share. Additionally, Intel will be receiving approximately half of the consideration in cash and the remaining amount will be deposited with Micron, which may be refunded or applied to Intel's future purchases under the NAND Flash supply agreement. The agreements also extend the companies' successful NAND Flash joint development program and expand it to include emerging memory technologies.

"Micron's joint venture NAND development efforts with Intel are a model of innovation, productivity and effectiveness," said Micron Chief Executive Officer Mark Durcan. "With IM Flash and its associated programs, our companies have become leaders in the NAND Flash arena. These new agreements build on that success."

mfdigital_eventcd.pngMF Digital, a long time leader in Live Event Recording announces its newest live event digital recorder and CD / DVD duplicator in-one – the 5200 Series ‘EventCD’.

The new EventCD combination recorder/duplicator system allows easy recording from virtually any mixer or other analog or digital source right to the “EventCD” hard disk and then almost instantaneous output to two and up to forty-two disc copies at once via its modular expansion approach. This powerful and easy to use system is ideally suited for the recording of church and school events, seminars, lectures, concerts, legal depositions, or any application where multiple audio recordings are instantly needed.

“Unlike the traditional CD recorders we see today, with the EventCD you can add and remove content and even include pre-recorded content like a run-out track. You can set and change your tracks markers, span longer recording across multiple discs and do so at any point and in any number. ”, according to John McGrath, US Sales manager, MF Digital. Mr. McGrath went on to say, “… and unlike virtually all CD recorders, the EventCD is also a very capable, and expandable, CD and DVD copier.”

The EventCD can record over 650 hours of uncompressed CD quality sound directly to the system’s hard drive. The user simply records the event or performance to the hard disk, sets the desired Start IDs or track points, optionally edits or sets one or more span points for longer recordings exceeding the capacity of a single CD, and then submits the job. Within three minutes of the event’s conclusion, the user will have multiple copies of the event. It’s a simple to use powerful system that can be expanded to suit any need.
