Intel sent out a press release today, announcing the Z-P140 PATA Solid-State Drive (SSD). Developed for handheld devices, this ultra-small SSD is available in 2GB and 4GB capacities and is capable of 40MB/s read and 30MB/s writing speeds.
Intel Corporation announced its latest entry into the solid-state drive market with the Intel Z-P140 PATA Solid-State Drive (SSD), one of the tiniest in the industry aimed at handheld mobile devices. Smaller than a penny and weighing less than a drop of water, these 2 Gigabyte (GB) and 4GB ultra-small devices are fast, low-power and rugged, with the right size, capacity and performance for mobile Internet devices, digital entertainment and embedded products.

SSDs use flash memory to store operating systems and computing data, emulating hard drives. The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD has an industry standard parallel ATA (PATA) interface and is optimized to enhance Intel-based computers, and will be an optional part of Intel’s Menlow platform for mobile Internet devices debuting in 2008.
The Intel Z-P140 is currently sampling with mass production scheduled in the first quarter of 2008. Full details can be found here. Add a comment
Toshiba has announced their entry into the NAND-flash-based solid state drive (SSD) market. The company's first drives will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities and will feature an original MLC controller that supports fast read-write speeds, parallel data transfers and wear leveling.

Moving NAND-based storage architecture forward, Toshiba's first solid state drives offer three densities: 32 gigabytes (GB), 64GB and 128GB. SSD realize low power consumption, a fast boot time, and lightweight, but market penetration has been held back by low densities and high prices. Toshiba's new SSD integrate an original MLC controller supporting fast read-write speeds, parallel data transfers and wear leveling, and achieve performance levels comparable to those of single-level NAND flash SSD. By applying MLC technology, Toshiba has realized a 128GB density in a 1.8 inch form factor. Toshiba expects the launch of its SSD line-up to speed up acceptance of solid state memory in laptops and digital consumer products, and to widen the horizons of the NAND flash market.
Toshiba's new SSD's will be showcased at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Samples and mass production will follow from the first quarter of next year. Full details can be found here. Add a comment
Super Talent recently announced the launch of two 256GB solid state drives (SSD). These new drives feature a Serial ATA interface and offer greater resistance to shock and vibration than standard hard disk drives. The I-Temp version also supports operating temperatures ranging from -40ºC to 85ºC

Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today launched a pair of 256GB Serial ATA (SATA) solid state drives (SSDs).

Super Talent’s new FSD56GC35M is 100% interchangeable with standard 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drives, but offers all the advantages of an SSD including greater resistance to shock and vibration, significantly lower power consumption and faster performance. FSD56GC35M supports a 0C to 70C operating temperature range. Super Talent also offers an industrial temperature (I-Temp) version of this drive, SS56GA6C35I, which supports an extended -40C to 85C operating temperature range. All I-Temp rated SSDs are tested at their rated temperature extremes to ensure functionality.
Both drives are sampling now and prices are available upon request. If you'd like to read more, Super Talent's entire press release can be found here. Add a comment
