The popularity of USB 2.0 makes the technology a preferred interface for removable storage media in consumer electronics and computing platforms. SMSC’s new generation of USB Flash media controllers reduce bottlenecks with throughput speeds up to 35 MB/s - nearly twice as fast as previous generations of SMSC Flash media controllers. This bandwidth increase enables a host of rich-content applications, including streaming video, fast multimedia file transfer and higher performance of computing technologies like ReadyBoost for Windows Vista. In trials using ReadyBoost, a technology that employs external Flash memory to boost performance in the Vista operating system, SMSC’s new Flash media readers delivered significantly better performance than systems without high-performance Flash media readers.

These new drives include: PICO-A, with a swivel lid; the retractable PICO-B; and ultra small PICO-C. Super Talent’s patented PICO series USB drives are manufactured using chip-on-board (COB) technology, which enables up to 8GB of Flash storage to fit into an incredibly minute case. PICO-C drives weigh less than a nickel (about 4.7 grams) and measure only 31.3mm x 12.4mm x 3.4mm.
PICO series drives are shock resistant, storing data securely even under adverse conditions. They also support read speeds upwards of 30MB/sec (200X) for lightning fast access to files. Beyond the NIST certification, theDataTraveler BlackBox features 256-bit hardware-based AES encryption via adedicated processor which automatically encrypts and decrypts data on thefly. The drive automatically locks down after ten consecutive failedpassword attempts, thus helping to prevent unauthorized access if the driveis lost, stolen or misplaced.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today introduced Cruzer Enterprise FIPS Edition, a USB flash drive with security certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States through its Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) program.
Many government agencies require FIPS certification for portable storage devices, as do some private-sector companies in highly regulated industries such as financial services and healthcare. Based on SanDisk’s secure Cruzer Enterprise flash drive, the new Cruzer Enterprise FIPS Edition has additional data protection features including:
- A software self-test routine that automatically runs whenever the drive is powered up, to verify the drive’s cryptographic function is intact.
- Physical protection for the drive’s internal security module to deter tampering.
