Marvell, a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today announced general availability of the Marvell® DragonFly™ platform, featuring DragonFly NVRAM and DragonFly NVCACHE. DragonFly is the storage industry's first intelligent NVRAM SSD accelerator – essentially a low-latency write-back cache running embedded software in a PCIe adapter form factor. Marvell is demonstrating DragonFly in booth #800-802 at the Flash Memory Summit, taking place today through August 23.
Marvell's revolutionary DragonFly platform is designed to remove the complexity associated with high-performance caching – while the rest of the industry continues to cobble together a hodgepodge of expensive DRAM, capacitors, SSDs, generic software and custom professional services. With DragonFly, Marvell has designed from the ground up a compelling fully integrated enterprise adapter solution that leverages the company's world-class chip technology and delivers the highest IOPS and lowest latency performance on the most consistent basis.
As the first in a new category of NVRAM-powered write-back caching solutions, the DragonFly platform plugs directly into commercially available servers with a PCIe slot. Moreover, it combines Marvell's SoC technology with its newly designed circuit boards. The result is a leading-edge sub-system solution that can consistently achieve 10-100x improvements in latency and server I/O performance while reducing power, space and storage capital costs in the datacenter. DragonFly is sold as a PCIe Gen2 x8 adapter with up to 8GB SODIMM ECC DRAM and up to 1.5 TB of external SSD storage; read, write-back and write-thru caching; synchronous low-latency peer-to-peer write-back mirroring; virtual machine migration and management tools; 3.2GB/s throughput; less than 22us latency; sustained 4K random performance of 220K IOPS read and 220K IOPS write; integrated onboard ultracapacitors to protect data in the event of power loss; and a wide variety of host operating system support, including RHEL, KVM, Xen, VMWare and Windows.

Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, announces its USB 3.0 Express RC8 has been certified as a go to market partner with Microsoft for usage with Windows To Go, a new feature of Microsoft’s Windows 8 Enterprise edition. Windows To Go enables enterprises to provision a full corporate image on an external USB drive which users can boot and operate from almost any PC.
Certified through the Windows 8 Hardware certification kit, Super Talent’s RC8 is one of the world’s top USB 3.0 drives with SSD technology; it provides high random read/write speed capabilities and reports itself as fixed media. Supertalent RC8 meets and surpasses many of the performance requirements of Windows To Go certified drives.
“We are pleased to announce Supertalent as one of our go-to-market partners for Windows To Go. We are committed to providing our customers with a rich, consistent, and personalized Windows 8 experience even when they run Windows 8 from a USB drive. Super Talent will offer drives specifically optimized for Windows To Go to help us fulfill this vision” - Karri Alexion-Tiernan; Director of Product Marketing, Windows Enterprise, Microsoft.
Kingston Digital, Inc., the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced it is working with Microsoft to create a Windows To Go-compatible USB Flash drive. Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8 Enterprise that enables enterprises to provision a full corporate desktop on an external USB drive, enabling users to boot and operate from multiple PCs. This new drive is a unique external USB 3.0 device capable of SSD-like performance and achieves all Windows 8 certification requirements.
The Kingston DataTraveler Workspace USB Flash drive, to be released this October, is designed for enterprise environments that want to use Windows To Go to support their mobile workforce and contingent staff for scenarios such as bring your own device and sharing PCs. The drive is fully bootable and incorporates SSD technology in a small USB form factor so users can access their enterprise system from a portable device.
“We are excited to have Kingston as an associate on Windows To Go. Our joint innovation will further enable mobile work styles. Kingston’s DataTraveler Workspace will give our customers the performance and endurance required to deliver a great experience when running Windows 8 Enterprise from a USB drive,” said Karri Alexion-Tiernan, Director of Product Marketing, Windows Enterprise, Microsoft.
Greenliant Systems, a leader in energy-efficient, highly secure and reliable solid state storage products, is now sampling its industrial temperature SATA and PATA interface NANDrive embedded solid state drives (SSDs) using 2-bits-per-cell (MLC) NAND flash memory. The new NANDrive devices are the first ball grid array (BGA) package SATA / PATA SSDs based on MLC NAND that are capable of operating at temperatures between -40 to +85 degrees Celsius.
NANDrive combines Greenliant's internally developed NAND controller with NAND flash die for a fully integrated SSD in a multi-chip package. SATA and PATA NANDrive products have the same pin-out across all capacities in each family to ensure backward compatibility and simplify board design. The BGA package allows for easy and firm mounting to a system motherboard, and the 1mm ball pitch increases long-term reliability for applications enduring mechanical shock, vibration and temperature cycling.
"Greenliant has optimized its NAND controllers and NANDrive production flow to ensure quality and reliability requirements, such as avoiding uncorrectable errors, when the MLC NAND is operating at extremely low and high temperatures," said Frank Lin, vice president of engineering, Greenliant Systems. "Through this technology advancement, we can now offer I-temp NANDrive, a cost-effective embedded SSD for cost-competitive applications that require extended reliability over extended temperature ranges."
