Synology® America Corp. today launched the DS409, a new 4-bay Disk Station that is designed to fill the need of small to medium sized business who are looking for an affordable, reliable and easy to manage network solution for file management and data backup.
The DS409 is sure to entice SMB users who are looking for solid value as the DS409 hits the market at a very aggressive price point, making it one of the best values in 4-bay NAS devices available today.
The DS409 is equipped with 1.2 GHz CPU, 256 MB DDRII RM, one Gigabit LAN port, two USB2.0 ports and one eSATA port. The DS409 supports up to 2 TB hard drives, enabling up to 8 TB of storage capacity with RAID 0 or JBOD configurations. The cable-less design of the DS409 delivers hassle-free installation and enhances system reliability and stability.
"We are committed to delivering products that minimize environmental impact and our DS409 follows that commitment," says Doug Self, product specialists at Synology America Corp. "The DS409, when operating under normal conditions calls for just 42.9 watts of power, which is significantly lower than the power consumption of a traditional PC server. In addition the ability to schedule the device on and off and the HDD hibernation feature reduces power consumption even further," adds Self.
The built-in disk holder of the DS409 was thoughtfully designed, making the DS409 compatible with both 3.5" and 2.5" hard drives. Once 2.5" hard drives are deployed, the smart fan design keeps the DS409's fan off under normal operation, only spinning up as needed, resulting in reduced power consumption and vibration, together with increased MTBF and shock tolerance.
"The energy saving features of the DS409 doesn't mean performance is compromised. Our laboratory test results show that when configured in RAID 5, the DS409 reaches 34 MB/Sec in Windows upload speeds and 47 MB/Sec in download speeds. The DS409 is a reliable solution to share and backup data and ensures an optimal price/performance ratio," adds Self.
The award-winning system software, Disk Station Manager 2.1 provides cross platform data sharing, Windows ADS integration, sophisticated FTP server, business mail server, corporate surveillance and flexible storage management. The provision of several backup alternatives, including Encrypted Network Backup, Local Backup and Desktop Backup and RAID 1/5/6 options, safeguard critical business data. The upcoming Disk Station Manager 2.2, will release it's beta in July with the official release of DSM 2.2 in September, bringing exciting new features in security and backup such as the built-in firewall with customizable security rules. In the upcoming DSM 2.2 Mac users will be happy with the much anticipated ability to use Apple Time Machine® as their backup application to back up their critical data to a Synology Disk Station. The DS409 ships with DSM 2.1 and will be easily upgraded to DSM 2.2 when it's available.
