According to DigiTimes, CMC and Ritek recently signed new licensing contracts with Philips that are effective for the next 10 years. In return, Philips reduced the royalty rate for CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW media by more than 70% from US$0.035-0.036 per disc to US$0.01.
Royal Philips Electronics has reduced royalty charges for CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW optical disc formats by 71.4-72.2% from US$0.035-0.036 per disc originally to US$0.01 for CMC Magnetics and Ritek, Taiwan's two largest optical disc makers. The new licensing contracts are effective for 10 years from December 31, 2009 to December 30, 2019, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Both CMC and Ritek confirmed the new licensing but did not confirm the rates.

VIA Technologies, Inc., a leading innovator of power efficient x86 processor platforms, today unveiled the VIA VL810 SuperSpeed Hub Controller, the industry’s first integrated single chip solution that supports the higher transfer rates of the new USB 3.0 specification.
USB 3.0 (also known as SuperSpeed USB) allows for a maximum data transfer rate of up to 5Gbps, or ten times the throughput available to USB 2.0 based devices. Other enhancements provide for improved interaction between device and host controller, including important advancements in power management.
Developed by wholly owned subsidiary company VIA Labs, the VIA VL810 expands a PC's USB capability by allowing more than one device to be connected to each host port. NEC Electronics America, Inc. today announced it will highlight the latest generation of Universal Serial Bus (USB) technologies at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES®) January 7-10 in Las Vegas. A working demonstration of the company’s USB 3.0, or SuperSpeed, capabilities will be showcased in the USB TechZone, located in the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) South Hall 3, booth #30769.
Daily demonstrations of NEC Electronics’ USB 3.0 host controller (part number µPD720200), the industry’s first USB-IF-certified USB 3.0 product, will feature a laptop computer with two USB 3.0 ports, with one port sending a video file at the SuperSpeed transfer rate to a USB 3.0 external storage device. To demonstrate the backward compatibility of the USB 3.0 host controller, the second port will send the same video file to a USB 2.0 external storage device for comparison. Samples of customers’ motherboards and cards using NEC Electronics’ USB 3.0 device also will be on exhibit.
