MPEG LA, LLC, world leader in alternative one-stop patent licenses, announces a call for patents essential to the Multiview Video Codec (“MVC”) standard used to deliver 3D video images. MVC is currently used for storage and playback of 3D video content on Blu-ray Disc™ devices and optical discs.
MPEG LA invites any party that believes it has patents that are essential to the MVC Standard to submit them by February 18, 2011 for evaluation of their essentiality by MPEG LA’s patent evaluators in order to participate in the creation of, and determine licensing terms for, a joint MVC patent license. MVC is described in Annex H of ITU-T Rec. H.264 (03/10) and ISO/IEC IS 14496-10:2010 (Dec. 15, 2010). Presently, evaluations will be based on ISO/IEC IS 14496-10:2010 (Dec. 15, 2010). Although only issued patents will be included in the license, in order to participate in the license development process, patent applications with claims that their owners believe are essential to the MVC Standard and likely to issue in a patent also may be submitted.
JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, today announced that its JC-64.8 Subcommittee for Solid State Drives will target the development of standards for SSDs in applications beyond conventional disk drive form factors. Building on JEDEC’s leadership in the development of standards for solid state drives and the success of recently published SSD standards JESD218 and JESD219, the interest in standardizing SSDs for non-traditional applications is being driven by rising demand for smaller consumer electronics devices.
“Momentum for adoption of embedded SSDs continues to grow and with the right OEM support, Gartner believes that embedded SSDs could potentially out ship traditional SSD form factor usage in mobile PCs by 20131,” according to Joseph Unsworth, Research Director at Gartner.
To answer the data storage market’s demand for faster, more energy efficient solutions in a smaller footprint, the use of SSDs in alternative form factors may provide an answer for product design engineers. SSDs in module and/or package form offer the ability to meet the demand for a smaller form factor, z-height advantages, as well as potential cost savings over traditional hard drive form factors. However, in order to fulfill this potential, widely adopted industry standards are seen as essential tools to reduce market confusion, facilitate broad adoption and alleviate product quality and reliability concerns.
The new ICY BOX IB-NAS6220 is a network storage for networking people who love music and movies, who want to share this love with friends and family and who are no IT-experts. The new ICY BOX IB-NAS6220 combines what commonly exists in separation: store your own data; enjoy your own data like movies and music wherever the Internet is available; confer rights to use while maintaining the control.
The NAS6220 has space for two 3.5" SATA HDDs with up to 2 TB. All data can be made available to the home network and are thus accessible through the Samba server. Also the printer server can be shared. For the installation you don't need special IT skills. If you can use a computer you are also fine with the NAS6220.

Mimoco, creator of the MIMOBOT® line of designer USB flash drives, and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment, announce their partnership through a license agreement at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The collaboration will introduce an inspired collection of iconic DC Comics’ super heroes and villains that will be translated into the unique MIMOBOT form with USB flash drive function. The designer character-based flash drive collection leads off with a vintage 1939-era Batman now available in a limited edition run of 5,000 units, and later joined by a full Batman wave of flash drive designs in February including Robin, Catwoman and The Joker. More MIMOBOT series based on additional DC Comics’ characters, including Green Lantern, Superman and The Flash, will follow in the near future.
Straight from Gotham City, the grey and black-clad Vintage Batman MIMOBOT is styled after the icon character’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27, in May 1939. Familiar yet foreign, this original vision of The Batman captures the Dark Knight’s initial bold design elements that echo the art deco and avant-garde style of the era. The Caped Crusader conceals his true identity — that of American millionaire Bruce Wayne by day, and doubling as crime fighter by night — battling evil villains like The Joker, The Penguin, Two-Face, Poison Ivy and Catwoman.
