Extending its innovation in the 1.8” hard disk drive (HDD) category, Toshiba Storage Device Division announces the industry’s first 1.8” drives with low-insertion force (LIF) SATA (Serial ATA) connectors, enabling a 10% smaller footprint compared to standard 1.8” drives using microSATA connectors. Developed for use in multiple devices, including tablets, consumer electronics devices and external HDDs, the new MKxx39GSL series offers three models, at 160GB (MK1639GSL), 200GB (MK2039GSL) and 220GB (MK2239GSL) capacities.
The MK2239GSL features the largest capacity 1.8” single-platter HDD (5mmH) available. The MK2239GSL, MK2039GSL, and the MK1639GSL are designed for the most demanding mobile computing applications, surpassing 2.5” HDDs in terms of vibration robustness, low power consumption, and quiet operation. Samples will be available for customer qualification in February.

Active Media Products is now shipping what may be the world's fastest 1.8" ZIF drive designed expressly to boost storage performance in laptop upgrades. The new SaberTooth ZF from AMP is an industry standard 40-pin PATA ZIF SSD, available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, that offers previously unheard of performance from a PATA drive, with sequential transfer speeds up to 130MB/sec.
The SaberTooth ZF will dramatically improve bootup and application load times compared to conventional ZIF hard disk drives. It incorporates the new EastWho IDE controller, which features garbage collection, wear leveling and bad block management, combined with highly reliable MLC NAND flash. I-O DATA Japan sent out a press release this morning, announcing its new DVRP-U8C series of portable DVD writers. Available in five colors - white, black, red, blue and brown, the DVRP-U8C series is capable of 8x DVD±R, 6x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 5x DVD-RAM writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 8x. These new drives are also USB bus powered and come bundled with Nero 9 Express Essentials as well as I-O DATA's QuickDrive LE management software.
The DVRP-U8C series is scheduled to ship in early February and is expected to cost about 6,300 Yen ($76US).

One-Blue, LLC, an independent licensing company, today announced it will launch a one-stop shop product license for patents essential to Blu-ray Disc products on April 1st, 2011, subject to necessary governmental clearance. One-Blue also announced that Mr. Roel Kramer has been appointed as CEO of One-Blue. Mr. Kramer, who has been the President of the Blu-ray Disc Association since 2007, succeeds Mr. Jerry Rosenthal, who had served as CEO since One-Blue was established in 2009.
“One-Blue has been designed to provide an important service to the entire industry while at the same time stimulating the growth and adoption for Blu-ray Disc™ products,” said Mr. Kramer. “I look forward to working with all of the companies participating in the One-Blue patent pool as we gear up to make the licensing program available in the marketplace by April 2011.”
Since issuing its call for Blu-ray Disc™ product patents in October 2009, One-Blue has been working diligently with potential licensors to ensure wide-spread adoption of the license program that One-Blue will administer. As part of this activity, new royalty rates under the licenses were recently announced. The new rates are now US$9.00 for a Blu-ray Disc™ player and US$12.00 for a Blu-ray Disc™ recorder; US$0.0975 for a BD-read only video disc, US$0.1075 for a BD-recordable disc and US$0.1350 for a BD-rewritable disc.
