STEC, Inc., The SSD Company, a leading global provider of solid-state drive (SSD) technologies and products, today announced the general availability of the company's EnhanceIO SSD Cache Software. The company offers Linux and Windows versions. In addition, a Linux version of EnhanceIO SSD Cache Software, based on Facebook's Flashcache caching module, will be made available under a general public license (GPLv2).
"Today's IT managers need to cope not only with data growth but also the need for faster application response times," said Jim Ting, vice president of product marketing at STEC. "SSD caching extends the useful life of a company's existing SAN by offloading read IOs to the SSD cache, enabling the SAN to process other IO activity."

STEC has submitted a version of the EnhanceIO SSD Cache Software source code to the Linux open-source community. This will reduce the barrier to entry for organizations who want the superior user experience and application performance of SSDs at a lower cost.

Millenniata today announced it has entered a manufacturing and license agreement with RITEK Corporation, the leading manufacturer of optical storage media in the world, to manufacture M-DISC optical discs.
“We are pleased to have RITEK join our M-DISC consortium of global partners who will help create a new data storage category centered on providing permanent storage to the masses,” said Paul Brockbank, Millenniata CEO. “RITEK’s manufacturing strength and expertise will help us meet the growing demand for the M-DISC.”

Biwin, an industry leader in flash storage products, will showcase a working PCIE based solid state drive (SSD) in a technology demo system in their booth at the Computex convention this week in Taipei. Although this product will not be released for sale, it is the precursor to the company’s future line of PCIE-based enterprise class SSDs.
Today's SATA SSDs deliver sequential and random performance that is dramatically faster than HDDs. But enterprise applications demand ever greater performance, requiring storage solutions with far greater bandwidth than SATA can provide. PCI Express, or PCIE, offers three big advantages as an SSD interface:
- universal availability;
- massive bandwidth in a single volume;
- general freedom from compatibility issues.
As Gen3 PCIE servers are deployed, available bandwidth to accelerate access to data in a single physical volume increases exponentially compared to SATA, with up to 8GB/sec of bandwidth for the PCIE x8 Gen3 bus.

Plextor unveiled its new M5S series SSD at Computex this week. While the drive won't officially launch until later this month, the company has released a few details. According to a post on Plextor's Facebook page, the M5S is capable of delivering up to 520MB/s sequential read and 390MB/s sequential write speeds as well as up to 73,000 random read and 70,000 random write IOPS. The M5S will also initially be available in 64, 128, 256 GB capacities.
