millenniata logo.pngMillenniata today announced Dell, Inc. will begin offering a permanent storage solution to its European customers with the integration of M-DISC compatible LG Electronics DVD and Blu-ray optical drives in Dell laptop and desktop computers.

Dell EMEA will begin offering the M-DISC Ready drives in their award-winning Business Class Precision Workstation, OptiPlex Desktops and Latitude Notebooks throughout Europe beginning this month.

“For the first time, Dell business users will benefit from a permanent storage solution that will last virtually forever,” said Paul Brockbank, Millenniata president. “So much of our lives today are created in a digital format, so it’s vitally important that we preserve and continue to share our information. We are very pleased that Dell’s European customers will now have access to our M-DISC technology.”

M-DISC Ready drives laser etch data onto the M-DISC’s inorganic rock-like material to prevent data loss, ensuring your files are safe and can be stored for up to 1,000 years. Unlike all other recordable DVDs that use organic dyes to hold data, M-DISCs won’t fade or degrade over time.

Rovi Corporation, driving digital entertainment innovation, today announced Rovi Digital Copy for Retailers, a new offering that is expected to provide consumers in Europe and the U.S. more ways to turn their physical DVD and Blu-ray Disc movie collections into virtual movie libraries. Rovi Digital Copy for Retailers offers solutions for in-store disc-to-digital conversion services, as well as retailer-branded in-home services. Both services will use industry proven Rovi technologies for content recognition and authentication, and utilize core components of Rovi Entertainment Store™, the company’s platform for digital storefront creation and management.

Rovi Digital Copy for Retailers ties into UltraViolet™ - the cloud-based entertainment ecosystem delivering a new way to collect and enjoy home video entertainment. The offering can be integrated as a component of services already powered by Rovi Entertainment Store, or incorporated into existing digital entertainment service infrastructures. Rovi expects the first retailer services powered by Rovi Digital Copy for Retailers to be introduced later this year.

With in-home disc-to-digital services, consumers simply insert a DVD or Blu-ray Disc title into a Rovi Digital Copy-enabled PC or Blu-ray Disc player. In the case of in-store offerings, consumers bring their physical disc collections into a participating store where a sales representative will lead them through the ‘conversion’ process. In both instances, once titles are authorized by the content owner, consumers will then be presented with the opportunity to purchase and trigger access to an UltraViolet digital copy. Digital copies can then be enjoyed by consumers on a range of UltraViolet-enabled connected devices, such as HDTVs, Blu-ray Disc players, set-top boxes, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Back in July, OCZ announced that it was working on its next generation SSD controller, the Indlinx Barefoot 3, and that it would begin sampling SSDs on this new controller in the August to September timeframe. Apparently, things are on schedule as Jess Luken, OCZ's Global Marketing Director, posted a picture of the Barefoot 3 on Twitter.

The Indilinx Barefoot 3 (IDX500M00-BC) is manufactured using TSMC's 65nm process technology. It also utilizes OCZ's internally designed Aragon 400 megahertz 32-bit processor which supports an SSD specific RISC instruction set. This allows most instructions and branches to be executed in a single cycle.

OCZ has not announced any Barefoot 3-based products yet. However, the company has said that we can "expect SSD sales related to Barefoot 3 in the third fiscal quarter", which should be sometime before the end of the year.
