Toshiba Corporation and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., (TAEC), a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today announced that it began shipping samples of its 64-gigabyte (GB) embedded NAND flash memory module equipped with a Universal Flash Storage (UFS) interface. The first in the industry, the new module is fully compliant with the JEDEC UFS Ver.1.1 standard, and is designed for a wide range of digital consumer products - including smartphones and tablet PCs.

With improved data processing speeds in host chipsets and wider bandwidths for wireless connectivity, demand continues to grow for large density, high-performance memory that supports high resolution video. A proven innovator in this key area, Toshiba is reinforcing its leadership role by being the first in the industry to ship samples with a 64GB UFS module.

Samples are mainly intended for evaluation of the UFS interface and its protocol in host chipsets and by OS vendors. Toshiba will schedule mass production of the 64GB UFS module, as well as other densities in its lineup, according to market demand.

Facing a relentless onslaught from tablets, smartphones and solid state drives (SSD), global hard disk drive (HDD) market revenue in 2013 will decline by about 12 percent this year, according to an IHS iSuppli Storage Space market brief from information and analytics provider IHS.

Revenue is set to drop to an estimated $32.7 billion in 2013, down 11.8 percent from $37.1 billion last year. HDD revenue will be flat the following year, amounting to $32.0 billion in 2014, as shown in the figure below.

“The HDD industry will face myriad challenges in 2013,” said Fang Zhang, analyst for storage systems at IHS. “Shipments for desktop PCs will slip this year, while notebook sales are under pressure as consumers continue to favor smartphones and tablets. The declining price of SSDs also will allow them to take away some share from conventional HDDs.”

Lite-On Technology (hereinafter “Lite-On”) announced today that its Board of Directors approved to commence a cash tender offer to acquire the remaining outstanding shares of Lite-On IT Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Lite-On IT”) through a 100%-owned subsidiary, Baoyuan Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Baoyuan”), at NTD 32.75 per share, in sight of industry trends and integration of corporate resources. The cash tender offer will start from January 31st, 2013 and conclude on March 15th, 2013. The acquisition is conditioned upon the purchase of minimum tender of 81,542,619 shares (i.e. 8.89% of Lite-On IT outstanding shares) and the approvals from domestic and international regulatory parties.

After the completion of the tender offer, Baoyuan will issue redeemable preferred stock as consideration in exchange for the remaining Lite-On IT common shares. Subsequently, Lite-On will commence the merger with Baoyuan and directly own 100% stake of Lite-On IT.

Lite-On expects to continuously retain its leading position as the world's largest player of optical drives and penetrate SSD market in the Information and Communication Technology industry and strengthen its competitiveness via this acquisition.
