Seagate Technology plc, a world leader in storage solutions, today announced its shipping its thinnest hard disk drive (HDD) ever to OEM partners — the Seagate Laptop Ultrathin HDD. Just 5mm thin, the Laptop Ultrathin HDD is designed to be integrated into ultra-thin, lightweight mobile computing devices and tablets all while delivering high capacity storage at an affordable price.
“When we originally demonstrated this solution last September, we knew we had a truly innovative product that would empower our partners to reimagine mobile applications,” said Steve Luczo, president, CEO and chairman of Seagate. “The strong support from our OEM partners indicates we have delivered on our vision and look forward to a new wave of innovative solutions enabled by this revolutionary product.”
The 2.5- inch drive is just 5mm thin and weighs a mere 3.3oz— making it about as thin as four stacked credit cards and lighter than a deck of cards. It delivers up to 500GB of capacity in 25 percent less space than its previous-generation 7mm counterpart, freeing up valuable real-estate within portable devices to accommodate additional designed-in features such as longer-life batteries and better air circulation. An affordable alternative to SSD storage, Laptop Ultrathin HDD helps blur the lines between notebook and tablets by enabling new emerging applications like convertible and detachable storage.

Memoright, a leading integrator of solid state drive (SSD) hardware and software, is launching the new generation M.2 (NGFF) with SSD specifications supporting the new ultra-high-speed PCI Express and SATA III interfaces. Compared to traditional mSATA offerings, the new product is smaller, more energy efficient and provides faster transmission speeds for a new generation of Ultrabooks, notebooks, tablet PCs and mini industrial host applications.
Memoright is launching two M.2 (NGFF) SSD products, the NF8-830 with support for PCI Express, and the N4-660 for SATA III at 6.0Gbps.
The NF8-830 M.2 (NGFF) SSD uses the new generation PCIE controller chip and supports the native PCIe Gen2x2 interface and flash memory made with a 19/20 nanometer process. With a 22 * 80 form factor, it is available in 128/256/512GB capacity options with sequential read/write speeds of up to 750/550 MB/s. NF8-830 provides ultra-high-speed read/write transfer performance, breaking performance bottlenecks in SSD storage products that are constrained by the SATA III interface.
As for the N4-660 M.2 (NGFF) SSD, the product supports the latest SATA III 6Gb/ps as well as the latest 19 nanometer process flash memory. In a 22 * 42 form factor, capacities of 32GB/64GB and continuous read/write speeds of up to 400/90 MB/s, the product offers an ultra-mini balance between performance and cost.

Hot on the heals of the new five-bay DS1513+, Synology America Corp. is pleased to introduce the DS1813+, the latest high-capacity, eight-bay, network attached storage (NAS). The DS1813+ provides eight screw-less drive bays, which support both 3.5" and 2.5" mechanical or SSDs. Plextor, a leading developer of high-performance digital storage technology, will preview the next generation of SSD (solid-state drive). In addition to multi-award winning consumer SSDs and specialized solutions for industry and enterprise, the Plextor booth will house the first 1Y-nm flash based SSD.
The industry and enterprise products on display include the tiny eMMC, mSATA SSDs, and NGFF SSDs, and a 2.5-inch ultra-high endurance SLC SSDs. An extreme temperature resistant power protected MLC SSD will also be shown as a sample of the advanced, customized solutions available from Plextor. This drive is capable of delivering random maximum read/write speeds of 94,000/81,000 IOPS at temperatures between -40 and +85°C. The SSD utilizes tantalum capacitors to prevent data loss in the case of power interruption.
Consumer products on display include the multi-award winning 100K IOPS capable M5 Pro Xtreme, entry-level M5S, and the new M5M mSATA SSD. Further details of the 1Y-nm flash based SSD also on display will be released later.

One-Blue, LLC, the one-stop shop for patent licenses from the leading providers of Blu-ray Disc technology, today announced that One-Blue and certain One-Blue patent owners have filed suit against Imation Corp. for infringing patents essential to manufacture Blu-ray Disc products.
The complaint, filed in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, asserts that Imation Corp., a seller of Blu-ray Disc products under the Imation, TDK and Memorex brands, has infringed six (6) U.S. patents: 7,290,272; 7,389,520; 7,292,509; 7,123,567; 7,349,309; and 7,158,472. These patents are included in the portfolio offered for license by the One-Blue licensing program.
“The One-Blue patent pool provides companies with a fair and cost effective mechanism for obtaining Blu-ray Disc product licenses,” said Mr. William J. Lenihan , Director IP Licensing, One-Blue. “We filed this patent infringement suit in order to maintain a level playing field for the members of the One-Blue patent pool—licensors and licensees alike who manufacture and sell Blu-ray Disc products. We have a duty to ensure that all companies selling Blu-ray Disc products honor the essential patents in the One-Blue pool.”
