Western Digital sent out a press release today, announcing its new My Passport Essential Portable USB Drives. These stylish, pocket sized hard drives are available in capacities up to 320GB and can be powered directly through the USB cable.

WD (NYSE: WDC) today introduced its new My Passport Essential Portable USB Drives. Redesigned to complement WD's popular My Book family of external drives, the drives introduce a sleek new form that feels good in your hand and fits neatly in a pocket or purse. Available now at select retailers and at WD's online store (www.shopwd.com), the new My Passport Essential USB Drives feature a beautiful glossy black finish and put almost a third of a terabyte of digital storage in the palm of your hand.

Weighing in at less than 5 ounces, My Passport Essential Drives are light and compact to carry and because they are bus powered, they do not need an external power adapter. Earlier this week, G-Technology unveiled the world's first 500GB 2.5" portable hard disk drive. Designed specifically for the Mac environment, the G-DRIVE mini Triple 500 comes formatted HFS+ and is equipped with FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 ports.

Toshiba announced this week that they will be introducing a line of mobile external hard drives based on their 1.8-inch HDD platform. These new drives will be available in 40GB, 80GB and 120GB capacities. The company has also expanded its line of 2.5-inch external hard drives to include a 320GB model.

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD), the industry pioneer in small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs), today announced it will introduce a mobile personal storage line based on its market-leading 1.8-inch HDD, along with the industry’s highest-capacity portable external hard drive based on the 2.5-inch HDD platform at 320GB.

As the only HDD supplier with a proven track record in marketing 1.8-inch HDDs, Toshiba is the first HDD manufacturer to introduce a 1.8-inch external product. Iomega announced at Macworld that they've expanded their line of eGo portable hard drives. The company has added new models with dual interfaces, higher capacities and eye-catching colors.
