Since the contract between Pioneer and Asustek Computer for ODM/OEM optical disc drive (ODD) production expired in July 2008, Pioneer is very likely to select one or more new ODM/OEM partners to make less profitable models, and the priority may be given to Taiwan-based makers, especially Lite-On IT and Quanta Storage, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Add a commentSuper Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced the addition of a stylish new swivel model to its ultra-petite PICO USB drive series, dubbed Pico D.
Super Talent achieves maximum miniaturization in the Pico series, renowned as one of the world’s tiniest USB families, by using chip-on-board (COB) technology. While typical USB drives are 2.5-inches in length, the Pico D measures only 1.4-inches. Moreover, Pico drives are shock resistant, water resistant, and support up to 200X (30MB/sec) transfer speeds. The Pico D is available now from NewEgg and NewBiiz in capacities up to 8GB.
ODM/OEM quotes currently stand at US$120-130 for a BD Combo drive and US$95-100 for a BD-ROM drive, but PC vendors have asked for the lowering of the former by US$20-30 to US$100 and the latter by US$5-10 to US$90, the sources pointed out. However, none of ODM/OEM makers are willing to cut prices because they are unable to keep down component costs and are reluctant to sacrifice profitability for orders, the sources explained.Add a comment
