With today’s expanding mobile workforce and increasingly aggressive threat landscape, corporate data is at greater risk than ever before. According to a 2013 survey by Forrester research, 32 percent of all breaches are due to the loss or theft of corporate laptops. Additionally, between June 2012 and June 2013, business travelers lost over 10,000 laptops, smartphones, tablets and other personal electronic devices in seven of the largest airports in the world. Given these challenges, it is imperative that companies look for certified storage solutions to help protect corporate IP and employee data.
Toshiba Corporation’s Semiconductor & Storage Products Company today announced the launch of the MD03ACA-V series, high-capacity hard disk drives (HDD) for surveillance applications. Toshiba’s purpose-built line of 3.5-inch HDDs are available in capacities up to 4 TB. The 6Gbit/s SATA drives spin at 7,200rpm and support the industry-standard 512B sector lengths with rotational vibration (RV) compensation to keep performance under multiple HDD configuration, making the MD03ACA-V series suited for customers looking for 24/7 video surveillance storage. Mass production shipment in the Japanese market starts from this month.
The robust design of the MD03ACA-V series provides storage to various video recorders, including surveillance digital video recorders (SDVR), surveillance network video recorders (SNVR) and Hybrid SDVR, delivering 24/7 operation with a mean time to failure (MTTF) of 1 million hours. With up to 4TB of storage, Toshiba’s MD03ACA-V enables support for higher resolution data streams, addresses the need for longer surveillance video retention periods, multi-streaming capabilities, wider temperature resistance and uninterrupted write applications.
As motherboard manufacturers unveiled their new Intel 9 Series products one after another, we can see the proliferation of PCIe Gen2 x2 M.2 interface on Desktop motherboards very clearly. However, ASRock Inc. took the lead among other competitors once again. This time it's the Z97 Extreme6 which boasts "Ultra M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4" socket stands out. With its doubled transfer bandwidth, ASRock Ultra M.2 is able to completely break through the speed limit of SATA3 6Gb/s and blow others away!
Ultra M.2 is one of ASRock creative innovations. Compared to normal M.2 with PCIe Gen2 x2 bandwidth, ASRock is the first one in the world to double the M.2 bandwidth to PCIe Gen3 x4! Furthermore, the layout of Ultra M.2 is also specially designed. On a regular motherboard design, the signal route starts from the M.2 device, goes through the onboard chipset, and finally reaches CPU. In contrast, by connecting the M.2 interface to CPU directly, ASRock Ultra M.2 has lower latency and pushes the I/O speed to a new level!

TDK Corporation announced today the successful development of the SNG4A series of serial ATA II compatible industrial solid state drives. The new NAND flash memory modules enable storage capacities of up to 64 GB with SLC type NAND flash memory. Measuring only approx. 22 x 42 mm, the modules support use in M.2 slots and will be available from August 2014.
The new M.2 form factor is currently garnering a lot of attention and is expected to become the dominant standard for consumer applications. Furthermore, the adoption of M.2 for industrial applications will most likely also be promoted heavily. Motherboards for industrial use not only have to achieve good transfer speeds, but there is also a growing tendency to place more emphasis on reliability, since products often have to be operable for periods of ten years or more.
Taking advantage of the fact that TDK develops SSD controller chips in-house, and with a view towards the convenience of industrial customers who prefer being able to use the same form factor for a long time, TDK has taken an early lead and has realized an SSD lineup in the M.2 form factor, with both Key B and Key M support and the ability to process commands up to the Serial ATA Revision 2.6 Specification.
