MPEG LA announced this week that they have filed a lawsuit against the consumer electronics company, Audiovox. According to the MPEG LA's press release, Audiovox failed to report fully its manufacture or sale of products that use the MPEG-2 or IEEE 1394 (FireWire) standards. MPEG LA also alleges that Audiovox failed to make full payments related to these products and would not allow an audit as permitted by contract.
MPEG LA, LLC, world leader in alternative one-stop patent licenses, today announced that it has commenced an action against Audiovox Electronics Corporation (“Audiovox”) for breach of contractual obligations as a Licensee to MPEG LA’s MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License (the “MPEG-2 Contract”) and 1394 Patent Portfolio License (the “1394 Contract”).

According to the complaint filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Audiovox has breached its contractual obligations by failing to report fully its manufacture or sale of products such as DVD players and digital TVs that use the MPEG-2 digital video compression standard or employ the high-speed transfer digital interface provided for in the IEEE 1394 standard, failing to make full payments for its manufacture or sale of such products, and refusing to allow an audit as permitted by the MPEG-2 Contract and 1394 Contract (collectively, “the Contracts”).
MPEG LA is seeking monetary damages, an account of all products that fall under the contracts and an injunction prohibiting Audiovox from manufacturing or selling MPEG-2 and 1394 products. Full details can be found here. Add a comment

The 1394 Trade Association recently announced a new specification, known as S3200, that will quadruple the speed of FireWire to 3.2Gbps. While slower than USB 3.0, which is expected to top out at 4.8Gbps, this new specification builds upon the IEEE 1394b standard and uses the same cables and connectors already deployed for FireWire 800 products.
The new electrical specification, known as S3200, builds upon the IEEE 1394b standard, preserving all the advantages of FireWire while offering a major and unprecedented boost in performance. The new speed uses the cables and connectors already deployed for FireWire 800 products, making the transition forward easy and convenient for 1394 product vendors and their customers. Because the 1394 arbitration, data, and service protocols were not modified for S3200, silicon and software vendors can deploy the faster speed FireWire quickly and with confidence that it will deliver its full potential performance. The S3200 specification is expected to be ratified by early February.

FireWire 800 products deployed since 2003 have proven that IEEE 1394b delivers outstanding performance. Operating without polling, without idle times, and without continuous software management, FireWire 800 efficiently delivers more than 97 percent of its bit rate as payload -- not overhead. FireWire 800 hard drives today can easily move over 90 megabytes per second. S3200 preserves 100 percent of the 1394b design efficiency and will deliver extremely high payload speeds reaching nearly 400 megabytes per second. Other interface technologies struggle to deliver half their advertised bit rate to the user, even under optimal conditions.
While there is no word on when S3200 devices will hit the market, the 1394 Trade Association expects to ratify the specification in February. If you'd like to read more, the entire press release can be found here. Add a comment

CDRLabs kicks off the week with a review of LG's second generation Super Multi Blue drive, the GGW-H20L. This all in one solution combines a Blu-ray Disc writer and HD DVD-ROM drive, giving users the ability to enjoy movies in both formats. The GGW-H20L is also capable of 4x BD-R DL and 2x BD-RE writing speeds, and is the first drive with the ability to write to BD-R media at 6x.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the GGW-H20L and see how it compares to some of the Blu-ray Disc writers from the competition. Are 6x BD-R writing speeds enough to put the GGW-H20L on top? You'll have to read the review to find out.
