ExtremeTech has reported that Hitachi-Maxell plans to begin shipping their holographic storage media by Christmas. These first generation discs will have a capacity of 300GB.
The first holographic storage media will begin shipping by Christmas, executives at media maker Hitachi Maxell have indicated.

In an interview, Rich D'Ambrise, director of technical marketing at Maxell, said that 300-Gbyte holographic disks will begin shipping either in November or December, as InPhase Technologies, the developer of the holographic technology, said last year.

However, D'Ambrise also indicated that the company will move to a second-generation, 800-Gbyte disc in 2008, and has targeted a 1.6-Tbyte removable cartridge by 2010.
With the media alone costing $120 to $180 apiece, I probably won't be asking Santa for one of these holographic drives. If you'd like to read more, the entire article can be found here. Add a comment
Verbatim has announced the world's first Mini DVD-R DL media. Developed primarily for camcorders, these new discs provide 54 minutes of continuous video capture or 2.66GB of storage capacity.
Verbatim Corporation, a first-tier media producer known for developing advanced DVD and Dual Layer technologies, announced today the world's first Mini DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) disc. Measuring only three inches (8cm) in diameter, the new discs provide nearly a full hour of continuous video capture time or 2.66GB of storage capacity on a single side. Verbatim Mini DVD-R DL media will be available at the end of August 2006 in North America, where the new Canon DC22 Mini DVD-R DL-compatible camcorder will be launched. Shipments to other parts of the world will begin when the new Mini DVD-R DL-compatible camcorders become available locally

Featuring two recording layers on a single side, Verbatim's new Mini DVD-R DL discs provide almost twice the capacity of current mini DVD-R discs. Fully compatible with the DVD-R DL specification approved by the DVD Forum, the media can be recorded with compatible camcorders and played back with the majority of DVD players. It is ideal for applications such as recording and sharing home movies, sporting events, training videos and business presentations as well as digital audio, photos and graphics.

According to an article at DigiTimes, Philips BenQ Digital Storage has been reorganized and will become a royalty agent for Philips. This change was due to Lite-On acquiring BenQ's ODD business earlier this year.
Philips BenQ Digital Storage (PBDS), a joint venture between Royal Philips Electronics and BenQ established in February 2003, has been reorganized to manage Philips' patent royalties for optical disc drives (ODDs) with operations to begin on August 7, according to PBDS.

The reorganization was due to Lite-On IT acquiring BenQ's ODD business unit in April of this year, noted PBDS. Philips originally negotiated and collected royalty fees for its ODD patents but has authorized PBDS to act as its agent after the Lite-On IT buyout, according to PBDS.
As part of the reorganization, PBDS has taken over BenQ's ODD R&D and sales staff and has set up a branch offices in the US and Europe. If you'd like to read more, the entire article can be found here. Add a comment
