Buffalo Japan has definitely been on a roll lately. The company not only announced one of the industry's first 14x Blu-ray Disc writers, they've now unveiled what they claim to be the world's smallest and lightest portable Blu-ray Disc writer. The BRXL-CSPI6U2-BK weighs in at a mere 240g and, thanks to a unique clamshell design, measures only 133 × 133 × 14.8 mm. This USB powered drive is capable of 6x BD-R, 6x BD-R DL, 4x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and a maximum BD-ROM read speed of 6x. The BRXL-CSPI6U2-BK also writes to triple- (100GB) and quad-layer (128GB) BD-R media at 6x and triple-layer (100GB) BD-RE media at 2x.
The BRXL-CSPI6U2-BK comes with a software bundle from CyberLink that supports BDXL recording as well as Blu-ray 3D playback. it also includes DiXiM BD Burner 2011 from DigiOn, which lets you burn copy-protected digtal content directly from DTCP-IP enabled DLNA devices on your home network. The BRXL-CSPI6U2-BK is scheduled to ship at the end of March and is expected to retail for about 21,000 Yen ($257US).

Based on what appears to be the LG BH14NS40, this new drive is capable of 14x BD-R (with Sony 6x BD-R media), 12x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds. On top of that, the BRXL-14FBS can write to triple- (100GB) and quad-layer (128GB) BD-R media at 6x and triple-layer (100GB) BD-RE media at 2x.
The BRXL-14FBS comes with a software bundle from CyberLink that supports BDXL recording as well as Blu-ray 3D playback. it also includes DiXiM BD Burner 2011 from DigiOn, which lets you burn copy-protected digtal content directly from from DLNA or UPnP devices on your home network. The BRXL-14FBS is scheduled to ship at the end of March and is expected to retail for about 18,900 Yen ($232US).

TEAC Europe recently launched its new BDXL compatible Blu-ray Disc writer, the BD-W512SA. Based on what appears to be the Pioneer BDR-207, this new drive can write to triple- (100GB) and quad-layer (128GB) BD-R media at 6x and triple-layer (100GB) BD-RE media at 2x. The BD-W512SA is also capable of 12x BD-R, 12x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and supports both horizontal and vertical mounting for most system configurations.
No word yet on price, but the BD-W512SA is scheduled to ship at the end of February.

The BDR-S07J is also capable of 12x BD-R, 12x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds and includes features like Pioneer's PowerRead and PureRead3+ technologies as well as power-saving and silent modes. Pioneer rounds all this out with a software bundle from CyberLink that supports BDXL recording as well as Blu-ray 3D playback. The BDR-S07J also includes DiXiM BD Burner 2011 from DigiOn, which lets you burn video directly from DLNA or UPnP devices on your home network.
The BDR-S07J is scheduled to ship in mid February and is expected to retail for about 25,000 Yen ($326US).

Designed for businesses, libraries and museums looking to archive important data to Blu-ray Disc, the BDR-PR1 features like a SATA 3 Gb/s interface and is capable of 6x BD-R, 6x BD-R DL, 6x BD-R LTH, 2x BD-RE and 2x BD-RE DL writing speeds. The drive also comes with software which can be used to check the recording quality by measuring the RSER (Random Symbol Error Rate) and the number of Burst Errors. The BDR-PR1 is scheduled to ship at the end of January and, while a price has not been announced, its expected to cost about three times as much as a consumer grade Blu-ray writer ($300-$400).
In support of Pioneer's new Blu-ray Disc writer, Mitsubishi Chemical (MKM) has released its new professional, archival-grade 50GB BD-R DL media. Designed to work with the BDR-PR1, these new discs have a lifetime of more than 50 years when stored at room temperture (25° C) and 80% relative humidity. Contrary to earlier reports, Mitsubishi's archival-grade BD-R DL media has been developed in-house and will continue to be manufactured in the company's own factory.
Add a commentPlextor, leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance digital media and storage equipment, announces the release of its latest External Slim DVD/CD Writer, PX-612U, with PlexTV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas today.
PlexTV is a new feature enabling Plextor’s DVD/CD drive to work with televisions, media players, and other USB-enabled devices. The external drive connects directly to the desired display via USB cable and the user is able to access information stored on a CD or DVD without a PC. PlexTV will be available exclusively with the PX-612U during the first quarter of 2012.
Currently, HDTVs are compatible with a wide variety of devices via USB connection, including hard drives, cameras, and flash drives, but they do not support optical disk drives built for computers. PlexTV enables the use of Plextor’s PX-612U drive with these previously unsupported devices by translating signal output to mimic a hard drive.
