Intel Corporation is making using a solid-state drive (SSD) easier with the introduction of its latest, Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox 3.0.
New features include:
- The ability to make firmware updates under Microsoft Windows (instead of DOS).
- Even easier graphical user interface (GUI) — (see photos).
- Contextual help — integrated, same-page one-click help pointers.
- A System Information button to help guide tech support troubleshooting.
- Hyperlink to Intel® SSD webpage for instant access to additional SSD information.
- The Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox has gone global. It is now available in 11 additional languages.
SSDs provide users one of the single best performance boosts to their PC system. But SSDs don’t behave the same as a traditional hard-disk drive (HDD.) For example, because they are so much faster than an HDD and are based on silicon, there is no need for SuperFetch or disk defrag. With the spectacularly increasing computing power of smart phones and tablet computers, the ability to simultaneously enjoy multiple applications such as web-browsing, 3D gaming and full-HD video recording/play-back requires unprecedented high IOPS performance on removable memory cards. Skip-free 1080p resolution video recording and fast application installing and launch are heavily affected by fast access speed of uSD cards. The company is stressing random write (IOPS) speeds up to 50, with random read speed (IOPS) up to 500. This represents more than a tenfold improvement in small random file operation performance compared to the current uSD cards.

LSI Corporation today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SandForce, Inc., the leading provider of flash storage processors for enterprise and client flash solutions and solid state drives (SSDs). Under the agreement, LSI will pay approximately $322 million in cash, net of cash assumed, and assume approximately $48 million of unvested stock options and restricted shares held by SandForce employees.
