Cool, the DL burns they have posted so far look really excellent so far too. Would be nice to get one drive that does everything well for a change, and if it does it fast double win.
Some of the few 24x burns look very good as well, slight peak at the end but usually not a bad as some of the other 18 to 20x drives can be.

Yeah, we'll see how these discs look with the BenQ. Writing quality always looks better on Lite-Ons.

I'd say the graphs he posted pretty much cover quality and speed. Thats a awesome burn considering it was at 24x, really looking forward to mine showing up, hope I get a golden sample [-o<

Is there a firmware hack for bitsetting DVD+R SL media yet?

It's only a matter of time. Once someone can extract the firmware, Liggy and Dee will probably have a bunch of hacks.

You might have posted just after he did and all the pictures were still loading so you only saw one of them I'd bet. depending on how many and size it can take a bit to completely upload and post everything.

Theres some nice burns as far as PIF's go. My 203b only does 18x so far to a couple of medias, don't think I have anything left that it might have done 20 to.
Have you tried a few multiples on the same mid to see if it looks like the drive learns at all like our beloved BenQ's did.

Thats an interesting question, are you infering that it currently does bitsetting for DVD+R DL media? I haven't seen anything to support that statement, can somone who currently owns one test this out? I need to replace my drive and would love to use this one, however I need the drive to be able to do bitsetting on DL media.

Actually it already supports bitsetting DL, I am asking about DVD5 (SL Single Layer)... I guess I should have been more clear and asked if Liggy and Dee had worked it out yet... yet being the key word.

Ian... Nice burn of the Verb's DVD-R (MCC 03RG20)... I got a ton of that media and never had a scan above Quality Score 95 on my DW1640. Actually they average around 93. Sounds like it would be worth while to pick one of for the Verb -R media I have.

Nice burn of the MCC 03RG20 (my most burned media atm), but MCC004 looks not very nice imho

Ian,
My Mac Pro (early 2008) only has PATA connections for "Super Drives". Is there a version of the Sony Optiarc AD-7240S available for my system? Or a way to get my Mac Pro outfitted to accept Sata interface optical drives? Any help will be appreciated.
Best,
Richard

They do make some SATA to IDE adapters, and IDE to SATA as well. I've bought the IDE to SATA here and they work well for me but I don't have a Mac. Try poking around here, pretty sure they have one that MAY work for you http://www.pcimicro.com

That might be the one you need.

They are supposedly also coming out with a Light scribe version, and MAYBE a IDE version, not positive about the IDE but saw the 72401, I think it was, with light scribe on their product page. No Firmware updates yet but they do have the thing listed and the link for FW goes to all drives they make, just nothing for this guy.
I posted a bunch of my test burns on Freaks and everyone else is jumping in too so lotsa burns posted. My only burn to my last Verbatim old dl disk was not so great but it verified fine in the burner after, others have had much better burns with it.
I'd say with a update or two the drive may reach godlike burns :)

Wasn´t NEC-burners with LS made by Liteon?

I think they have been, thats why we all wanted to know if it was a TRUE NEC design/chip, which it is. I HATE LiteOn dvd burners myself and usually try to avoid anything with a mediatek chip in it, though my S203b isn't bad, just not as impressed with it as some have been.
