Mitsubishi Chemical to Stop Blu-ray Disc And DVD Production

Has not been confirmed yet, but I would not be surprised if its true. Not that it would have much of an impact on those of us in the US and Canada as most of the Verbatim branded discs are already made in Taiwan or India.

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp. will cease production of Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, according to sources.

Mitsubishi Chemical's retreat comes against a backdrop of declining profitability globally due to competition with low-priced BDs and DVDs manufactured overseas.

Overall sales of DVDs are declining, while global sales of BDs are still small.

It is the first such move in the domestic BD industry, where four other makers compete, highlighting the possibility of rivals following suit. In the DVD sector, Mitsubishi Chemical’s departure will leave Taiyo Yuden Co. as the sole Japanese manufacturer.
