No, the 166S is in fact a bad DVD reader.

It seems LiteON makes cheap DVD readers today, at cost of quality.

The older model however DVD LTD-163 and LTD-163D are very good, but it seems due cutting to much in cost, the quality of the latest DVD reader, the 166S, is much worse than the 163(D). It's sad......

See also my post about the "166S can't read DVD+RW", you'll see in detail why I think this way about the 166S.

Many users on this forum have the 166s DVDROM. In fact, Liteon will always release firmware to improve the drive's reading ability.

For performance, you can check out my review.

I think the 166S model is very good. I didn't tested the 163D, but I think the 166S is much better. I have one and I love it

Nice review, vey well done, thank you ! :)
Do you also plan to include the read properties from the 166S for DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW ?
I'm already looking forward to see these results !

I am not able to test the 166s with DVD+-R/RW discs because I don't have any.

But do wait for the upcoming review here in CDRLabs, Ian is going to put up one.

pat357, although I appreciate your opinion based on your bad experience, I think you shouldn't generalize based on it at this point. As far as I can tell you gave up on the 166S before determining whether your problem with the 166S was isolated or common to all 166S drives. Others have reported that their 166S drives can read DVD+R, and it is specified to do so, so you may have just had the unfortunate luck to get your hands on a bad batch. Of course, you may be correct. Maybe quality control has suffered. But I think it would be premature to generalize based on two bad drives in one system.

By the way, you never gave the serial numbers for both your drives. I was wondering if, based on the serial numbers, it could be determined that both came from the same batch.

I must say that LTD-166S appears me to be better then LTD-163 drives .
There is a bigger firmware , Multi Read ability , it's the shorter DVD-ROM drive . Though it is still noisy and makes a small but awful noise when seeking a cd .

My small review :
www.ifrance.com/ngravexpli/index.htm

If someone can test DVD+R DVD+RW DVD-R DVD-RW reading performance and doesn't want to make a website he can e-mail me the results .

I say the size of the firmware does not affect the drive's performance.

I have both 163D and 166s, with the latest firmware for the 163D, it reads many of my DVDs (DVDROM/DVD-Video) better, most likely due to better, tweaked firmware.

166s is still a new product, give Liteon some time to tweak the firmware.

BTW, my 166s was also made on October but too bad I don't have any DVD+-R/RW discs to test.

I already saw a trustful source on CDFreaks.com confirming that the 166S model can read DVD+R/+RW and it was not using the latest firmware.

It's true that Lite-On hardly makes profits on such low-priced desktop DVD-ROM reader drives. Better for them to concentrate now on writer drives, combo drives, slim drives, next-generation DVD players, and so on. But it's the same for LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Pioneer, and other DVD-ROM makers. Anyway, I wish these threads could be merged into one for easier reference.
