DRU-500A updated alphabetized media list (Nov 9 2002)

Postby VEFF on Sat Nov 09, 2002 12:27 pm

Please let the other post die (I will edit its title, since it can't be deleted):

The following is an UNOFFICIAL list of media that have been reported to work with the DRU-500A.

Thanks to all those who helped create this list via their posts here and at other web sites (vcdhelp.com forums etc.)

WARNING 1: your experience may vary by batch and vendor.Media design/quality can vary by batch, especially if comparing batches manufactured several months apart.

WARNING 2 : These are all based on individual user reports, so be careful!!!!

WORKING:
Accu DVD-R
BEALL DVD-R
CompUSA DVD-R
Fuji DVD+RW
Generic 2X DVD-R (allmediaoutlet)
GQ DVD-R
High Quality 2X DVD-R (cdrdvdrmedia)
Imation DVD-R
Imation DVD+R
KHypermedia DVD-R 1X (added Nov 12 2002)
LAC DVD-R
Maxell DVD-RW version 1.1, 1X
Memorex DVD+RW
Meritline 2X DVD-R
Meritline DVD+RW

Sony DVD+RW
TDK DVD-R
TDK DVD-RW
TDK DVD+RW
Traxdata 1X DVD-R
Verbatim DVD-R
Verbatim DVD+R
Verbatim 2.4X DVD+RW

MIXED RESULTS:
DVDPro 1X DVD-R - work for some [could depend on batch once again]; others reported problems, although it could be software since the drive is new, and the new Nero and Stomp weren't out at the time.
Optodisc DVD-R - (very) mixed results
Prodisc 2X DVD-R - newer batch did NOT work, older one did. Be careful!

I am pleased to announce that after reading the previous list of media, I went out and bought 20 TDK DVD-Rs. The first one I tried worked!!

Thank you for compiling that list!

The Memorex DVD-R and DVD+R will not work in my drive at all. I've made several coasters of each type.

It took 10 of those TDK DVD-Rs to backup just my MP3 collection (each disc full) and I am happy to say that each went without a hitch. Seek times on the DRU seem to be faster than on my hard drive even. Yes, it takes longer to start a music video, but moving the progress slider from start to close to end only pauses the video a second. On my hard drive, the pause is longer.

I think this may be because my hard drvies don't have that 8MB buffer like the Sony unit does.

Anyway..Every non-coaster is a cheer and a smile in your direction. Its nice to know one can go to a newsgroup like this and get good, useful answers to one's questions. I emailed Sony about the drive 3 weeks ago and never heard back. Maybe Sony should hire you to do their support too. :)

Someone had success with these non-prime brand names, after upgrading to the new firmware (1.0d):

Optodisc DVD-R
Optodisc DVD-RW
Bulkpaq DVD-R
Prodisc DVD-R

It seems Sony's DRU-500A is going to be good competition for the new Pioneer A05.

Today or tomorrow, I will be receiving my DVD-R media from my exchange order (had to exchange 30 Prodisc 2X that didn't work with 1.0c):

Free test samples:
1 Prodisc 2X - discontinued or sold out after the one I get from him though :(
1 Princo 1X.

Main order:
30 Princo 2X (already tested one with 1.0c and went fine).

I'll post my results.

Just bought some KHypermedia DVD-R discs (half price) even though
I have 32 DVD-R discs arriving tomorrow, and have 12 or so DVDPro DVD-R discs left.
This was only supposed to hold me over till 4X media shows up
(at reasonable prices).

Couldn't resist testing them with the new firmware :)

EDIT: Found out that someone already burned these with the DRU500A and the old firmware.
So the only left to find out is whether they will burn at 2X.

EDIT2: They only burn at 1 speed; but they do work.
No big deal; I was just having some fun :)

That is really strange. Mine are from OfficeMax; maybe they are a newer batch?
My very first burn went fine. Played fine too.
Someone else also burned them with his DRU-500A without trouble.

Did you use Stomp Record Now Max 4.5?
I think some of the other software does not yet support the drive 100%.

I wish you had RecordNow Max 4.5, then we could see if it is really the media.
Do you have Lossless Linking enabled in RecordNow 4.5 options (buffer underrun protection)? If not, something could be kicking in (screen saver or scheduled task) and affecting your burns.
How many gigs are you trying to burn?

I'll try a full disc tonight; the one last night was only a 1.5 gig disc image.

Sorry to hear it; then the two things I can think of are that
1) You got a bad batch of discs
or
2) You got a different batch than I did. The exact same thing happened to me with Prodiscs - one batch worked, another didn't (same drive, same software etc.).

Mine have a silver top with medium blue writing on the top of the disc,
(and were purchased at OfficeMax last night).

At least there are plenty of other discs that work fine now that the new firmware update has been released.

I think the quality control at some factories isn't what it should be to say the least.
I was informed by the vendor I used, that the Prodisc 2X have been discontinued, because Prodisc felt they weren't high enough quality (anymore).
Interestingly, those are the exact ones that failed (with 1.0c).
He sold about 5,000 though since they became available, and everyone
loved them; I wonder if they changed something recently though.

All the other brands I have tried worked (most BEFORE 1.0d).
Some of it was jus not happening to pick the problematic brands/types at the time.

I've lost 2 k's so far and even a simulate fails for me on the rest so I haven't even bothered burning the test. I sent them an e-mail. We'll see if they get back to me.

I lost one in Nero and one in Veritas, Nero always stops at basically 5:42 into the burn. Veritas got further, but it burns differently (so it seems). I flipped 'em over and they're the same.

I've also not been able to burn the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R's I bought from Dell 2 weeks ago. Both lost in Nero. They burn to 100% and fail. I put the Nero error code in my other thread here http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=40059 I don't have the ability to simulate these blanks. Firmware 1.0d didn't make any difference for any of my problems.

So far the only thing I've burn sucessfully was an audio CD yesterday and a Verbatim 2.4x DVD+RW.

I haven't tried Verbatim DVD+R media, so it could just be the media not being supported by the drive, although I believe it is supposed to be supported?

Instead of using Nero, maybe you can try the trial version of RecordNow Max 4.5 and see if it helps?
I have had nothing but good results with this update since it came out.
If it doesn't work, it won't cost you anything extra, since the trial is free.

As I said I would do for you in my other post, I will use Nero tonight to burn some data files to a KHypermedia, just to make sure it isn't the software (I think it is your batch of KHypermedia for reasons stated in my other post, along with the fatc that several people, myself included, have had success with KHypermedia DVD-R and the DRU-500A), but at least we can find out for sure tonight, by my using Nero, which is what you used.

The DVD+R seems to be a Nero issue. I was able to burn a Verbatim DVD+R with RecordNow 4.5 this morning.

There are other people who have had problems with the K Hypermedia also in the DRU500a. Just look at this thread.

Burned a Prodisc 2X DVD-R at 2X (free sample) successfully!

That was the only brand I had some problems with, with firmware 1.0c; this one worked fine... :) Too bad the media is being discontinued.

Will try using Nero (instead of Stomp) with a KHypermedia disc, to give stereodude some feedback.

Had no problems burning them with Stomp.

The following is a summary of my personal burning experiences since getting the DRU-500A a bit over 2 weeks ago.

I use StompRecordNow Max 4.5 exclusively for all my DVD burning needs.
I upgraded the firmware to 1.0d

I have been able to successfully burn every medium I have tried (using the above-mentioned software and firmware):

DVDPro 1X DVD-R
KHypermedia 1X DVD-R
Sony 2.4X DVD+RW
TDK 2X DVD-R
Princo 1X DVD-R
Philips 2.4X DVD+R
Prodisc 2X DVD-R (had one bad batch [silver shiny top]; the other two [one is silver frosted; one is silver shiny] worked fine)
Princo 2X DVD-R

Hey veff, how come you're not using advdinfo to report on what media is really being used?
The advdinfo dump sure beats trying to describe the color of the surfaces from
different batches.

http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtop ... =9901#9901

advdinfo works with the dru500 (heck, it works with ordinary dvd-rom drives too).

Thanks for reminding me :)
I actually downloaded it a week or two ago but sort of forgot about it.

I had also read only one post about it, and it happened to be by someone who was having problems with it, but isn't that the case with all software (you will always have some users with problems due to conflicts etc.)

I'll run them all through this weekend sometime (good thing I wrote which was which in red CD/DVD marker on them after burning :) )

I also burned one of the new batch of Princo 2X at 2X last night (these were the replacements for the Prodiscs I exchanged before the firmware update became available, that didn't work with 1.0c).
Worked like a charm (I had tested a free sample before hand, but got nervous that this batch would be different).
I should hopefully have enough blank discs now (about 47) till 4X media hits the online e-tailers.

There are many threads about advinfo over at
http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php ... forumid=60

There is even a thread database about compatible media. However most posts concern
the pioneer burner. Would be nice to start a more general database that takes into
account more things such as firmware revision and burner software revision.

As for problems running advdinfo, those seem to be due to ASPI layer issues.
I think the easiest fix is to just copy the wnaspi32.dll from nero into the directory where
you run advdinfo.
