Not the real reason why Ritek Dual Layer is bad supported.
It's Ritek policy.
It's not approved by Philips which means lower priority. Because most times this can indicate 2 things. Huge variations in media which means more work for finetuneing. Or the companny simply thinks there big enough to force compatability.(Taiyo Yuden got away with this ! and so some others think they can do it to.)
Ritek is launcheing one after another media (R03 !/ G05 / Dual layer) and is just hopeing that being big would actually mean that compannies will support there media even if it takes much work because of there huge variations. Well you can forget it. Most compannies will do Japanese first then there partners and then the stuff that's easy to do and then we get the compannies that are big but might need lot's of tuneing.
In other words most compannies do not have Ritek on high priority list when were talking about support.
Now why does MCC/MKM media work that well. Well simply because it's the standard for the media. In other words if MCC and partners manufacture according there own quality rules it should allways work or else the drive manufacturer couldn't claime dual layer support.
All early test media for setting up support was MKM.
Let me say this when RICOH media hits the streets I think it will be better supported as RITEK even while the RITEK is longer on the market.
Trying to make something "foolproof" only forces nature to make a better fool.
