ID these "Sony" discs?

Postby jase on Fri May 07, 2004 9:01 pm

I've bought 2 different batches of what appear to be media out of the same factory now (DVD-R discs).

One was an "Infiniti" 2x disc, the other a "Discrite" 4x (these are both from the same distributor). They both have a MID of "Sony", the 4x being "Sony04".

Both types have a darker coloured dye formulation, and both work well, capable of being written at 6x (8x in the case of the 4x) without any problems.

The serial number on one of the 4x discs is:

DE11009031826 1 C2M120

The format of the 2x is much the same.

I haven't been able to work out which factory these come from. The dye colour is similar to TY/CMC/ProdiscS03/PostechG04 (hopefully you can picture the sort I mean).

Now, I know that Sony have been taking discs from Lead-Data, Acer/Benq (Daxon?) and Prodisc. I'm pretty sure they are not LD or Prodisc, but I've never come across the Acer/Daxon stuff before.

Anyone shed any light on where these are coming from? I don't think they're generic "fake Sony" crap, simply because (a) they work, (b) they have unique serial numbers and (c) the dye colour is not the usual pale purple mush you get with typical crap discs.

One other thing, on the writing side, there is a stamper number: ARM504 D0060 or similar.

Ideas?

Can you have a look and see if the media id is the same as this:

00000000 00 6C 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 86 0E 11 .l...@....R.....
00000010 66 78 80 00 03 53 4F 4E 59 30 34 00 04 44 31 00 fx...SONY04..D1.
00000020 00 00 00 00 05 A8 82 00 20 00 02 00 06 09 11 11 ........ .......

Mine have hub marking ARM5G4 D00070

and

4123NZCHT2A014821

These are definitely genuine media, sold by Sony.

My box says made in Austria !!! but I'm sure its Japanese media looking at the very good burn results.

Thanks for that :)

Looking at the hub/stamper number there it appears that, at very least, these discs are using Sony stampers.

The company who sold them did refer to them as "Sony manufactured", so it is entirely possible that these are Sony's "B-grade" discs.

I have to say that they do work very well, so perhaps they are genuine media.

Mine is made by Daxon in Taiwan. (packaging says made in Taiwan too).

1: serial number: ARM5G4 D0070 and DFQ1011252253 1 C2M120.
This serialnumbering system is similar to the one used by Daxon.
2: Mine is Fortis and Sony branded (both types look identical and is bought in 25 spindles). Since I work part time for a company that sells CD/DVD media I've got it confirmed by Fortis that this media is actually made by Daxon.

Maybe the cardboard box, and jewel case inlays were made in Austria and my media is also Daxon

Do the Daxon discs have a small bar-code around the hub area?

Mine have ADVDINFO details as follows...

Code: Select all
00 6C 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 86 0E 11  .L...@....R.....
66 78 80 00 03 53 4F 4E 59 30 34 00 04 44 31 00  FX...SONY04..D1.
00 00 00 00 05 A8 82 00 20 00 02 00 06 09 11 11  ........ .......

Which appears identical to yours.

The hub/stamper number is actually ARM5G4 D0060, the same as yours apart from it's D0060 instead of D0070.

The only difference is the serial number format, but I'm sure that can be explained away.

So, these do seem to be the Sony/kdg discs exactly the same as yours :)

The only question is, then: how come these discs are so cheap? The 4x discs only cost me 30p each ($0.54 or 0.45euro)...

Excellent.

Between Oc-Freak and jackass you've got to the bottom of it :D

That serial number is the same format as these discs.

So they are made by Daxon/Acer as I suspected they might be.

That's good news, these are a very good value disc if that is the case. Acer media in the past has always been very good for me.

What's your experience been with them OC?

Yes it's strange. Those sold as fortis is damn cheap too.

And the quality is very good, I prefer these over Ritekg04 any day! Still not beating TY though ;)

And yes - they work excellent at 8x with hacked firmware on many writers too.

I just bought some of these Sony discs (package says made in taiwan), and I am debating about getting more. How do these compare to Prodisc S03 media?

Very similar quality I'd say -- I've had zero coasters from either; both have low PI/PO errors and both work very well with picky DVD players and consoles. A case of whichever's cheapest IMHO.

Gotcha, thanks for the into. Prodisc is definitly cheaper, as it is available online for around $40 for 100 discs, and the Sony discs are $20 for 25 discs.

Daxon discs don't have that bar-code that you mention. They are Made in Taiwan.
The ones Made in Austria do have that bar-code around the hub area.
