not necessarily.
i don't think it's a copyright protection system.
some older DVD players won't play CDRs.
[i don't know if this was to "battle" piracy (prevent people playing their CDRs), but if that's the case we all know that was a major failuer. all newer DVD players support CDRs, MP3 , DVD+/- R etc. etc.]
some old players, even though they don't play CDRs, do play CDRWs. you can try burning an Audio CDRW and see if it plays on your DVD player.
