Philips will present on the Cebit the DVD double Layer burner "DVDRW 885K". The burner burns DVD+R blanks with nearly the double capacity compared with the at present available DVD burners. Altogether fit on a double Layer blank 8.5 gigabyte at data.

The drive assembly with 8facher burning speed and the second Layer with 2,4facher speed describes the first Layer of a DVD+R. DVD+RWs describes the drive assembly only in the single Layer mode and with 4facher speed.

The reading rate with DVDs amounts to twelvefold and the drive assembly reads also DVD R(W)s. CDs burns the drive assembly with 24x10x40facher speed. For the Buffer Underrun protection provides "Seamless left". The DVD burner "DVDRW 885K" will be available starting from July in the trade. The price for the drive assembly does not stand at present yet.

So much for an early spring release date. If Philips isn't going to start shipping their drive until July, I can't see other manufacturers shipping theirs any earlier.

Am I correct in understanding from the article in German (not my native language) that in DL mode, the first layer is written at 8x, and then the second one at 2.4x? This should result in a writing time of under 35 minutes, which is a big improvement on the 50 or so it would take if it was doing it at 2.4x for both layers.

Can anyone confirm this? 35 minutes is fairly ok, while nearly an hour is a little long.

That seems correct. And only DVD+R DL for now.

If that's true about the speeds, then it kind of makes Pioneer's -R DL offering look fairly puny: 1x at the end of the year.

Any idea on the price of these drives, and of the media? Will the media be about twice the price of a -R disk, or much more? If these drives are at all reasonable, I'll be getting myself one I should think...

i'm betting that by the time it's actually released, the Pioneer will be faster than 1x as well.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it as 2x to start with. They wouldn't screw themselves over *THAT* much I don't think! LOL!

Yeah,I too was thinking the same thing. When the burners are oficially released they will support minimum 2X writing speed.I have waited for DL burning so long.By the way I really dont need DVD burner as DVD is not raging here in India.I will get one when I think I need it most.....
