I used the usual K-Probe settings: 4X and 8 ECC. The reading curve is from a JLMS XJ-HD165H

1st disc written with Plextor PX-708A firmware 1.04 took about 9 minutes to write as the drive slowed down to 4x on the end of the disc (disappointing).

VERY disappointing result, MCC 002 (4X DVD+R) works much better!

2nd disc written with NEC ND-2500A firmware 1.06 at 8x, write time was 9 minutes and 28 seconds.

Image

Image

Better, but still far from as good as hoped. Also disappointing. :(

3rd disc written with Lite-On LDW-811S firmware HS0K at 8x, write time was 8 minutes and 36 seconds.

As we could see the disc is bad at the end, except for this the result is ok...but nowhere near good.

4th disc, written with BTC DRW1008IM firmware 0054 at 8x, writing time was 10 minutes and 28 seconds

Image

Image

The first area that is written at 4x is good, the rest is :Z :Z :Z The strange K-Probe scan is due to the LDW-411S drive failing to read it correctly (servo failure messages in K-Probe).

5th disc, written with BTC DRW1008IM firmware 0055 at 8x, writing time was 10 minutes and 27 seconds

Image

Image

The first area that is written at 4x is still good, the rest is :Z :Z :Z The strange K-Probe scan is due to the LDW-411S drive failing to read it correctly (servo failure messages in K-Probe).

All in all the MCC 003 media is a major disappointment. :( :( :a

This just proves the behaviour C't allready spotted in there 2nd issue of this year.
8x writers are not ready for 8x media. And it looks that newer firmwares haven't improved much.
Now this is weird. It looks like the companies spend a lot of time to overclock the media which was on the market but now that the real thing is also on the market the media isn't good supported.

Since MCC did ship the appropriate info and media on time I can only think of 2 things:
A media is a bad batch
B drive manufacturers only interest is what is current on the market and are lazy supporting future products.

Argument for A: All drives failed.

Argument for B: In C't tests the drives failed also for Philips 8x media.
and only one drive(benq) did perform okay on MCC media.

So I personally think that the drive manufacturers focussed to much on the media that was out there and took to much time for optimising and overclocking of 4x media.
Still we will probally see some new firmwares very soon solving most problems.

It's good to see that I'm not the only one seeing poor results with this media. Like RJW said, this will probably be improved in future firmware updates. It better be considering the premium Verbatim is charging for these.

So what's next the Riteks or ricoh's haven't spotted these last ones yet still they should be out there quite soon.

Now I'm interested in how the new Pioneer A07 will perform with this media.

By the way Philips licescing has the following manufacturers listed for 8x DVD+R media.

DVD+R 4.7Gbytes speed 8x "Provisional Approval"
18 MID code MCC type 003
Verbatim/Mitsubishi branded DVD+R media
19 MID code RICOHJPN type R02
Designed by RICOH, produced by RITEK.
20 MID code PHILIPS type 081
Philips branded DVD+R media
21 MID code MAXELL type 002
Produced by Hitachi Maxell, Ltd.
22 MID code CMC MAG type E01
Produced by CMC Magnetics Corporation

Still no Ritek R03 but as we can see CMC and Maxell are now there.
As you also can see RICOHJPN is designed by Ricoh and produced by Ritek. So what is Ritek R03 then ? Yes Produced by Ritek Corporation based on R02 and R01 media

For the rest interresting is that MBIL has provisional approved 4x media.
These might be based on Mitsubishi AZO technology and I personally hope so. Still MBIL would probally have even worse support as CMC.

Also interesting I read CMC was makeing 4x DVD+RW for Philips however they haven't got approval for them. Hmm wil check it was a typing error.

DVD+RW 4.7Gbytes speed 4 x
12 - production equipment test -
Samples of the DVD+RW production line from Unaxis Balzers AG show the ability of the standard line to produce certified DVD+RW media.
13 MID code PHILIPS type 041
Produced by ODTC
14 MID code RICOHJPN type W11
Designed by RICOH, produced by RITEK.
15 MID code MKM type A02
Verbatim/Mitsubishi branded DVD+RW media

Sony is working on 8x media. But that one hasn't been approved yet.
Expect them to be very soon added.

and Prodisc not heard of them. keep in mind Ritek (own, not ricoh)and prodisc 4x mdi codes are provisional approved

for the people that are interested the 4x CMC DVD+RW is a type error. you can only find 2.4x DVD+RW from CMC in stores.

Other one we mid codes we will see soon on Philips site is the code from 8x code from Taiyo yuden.
