IAN, where is the LG 4040B review..?

Postby Peter_Mann on Sun Sep 28, 2003 11:35 am

just wondering,
it's been weeks since you said you were working on it.
My 4040B has trouble with DVD-R media and I was hoping to get some insights from your review.

Cheers!

Ian is very very slow at getting the reviews out. He generally posts one per week, around Monday or Tuesday. Nonetheless, he does produce the best reviews, he is just slow with them.

Don't knock the slow pace of the reviews. Ian has a full-time job, so we should just be grateful that he gets the reviews out for us.

I'm just stating a fact that the reviews are slow to come out. I never said that it was not worth it for the reviews. They are the best reviews on the net, just a little while at getting out there.

bhairavp hit the nail on the head. I've been busy.

I've finished testing the 4040B. However, I'm working on a review of another DVD writer right now. One that even more people are waiting for.

I feel for you Ian! I work a full time job too, and I have a VERY hard time making enough time to put out my CD-R reviews! and given that I currently only have one PC and have to use it for both business and pleasure.... well, it's not easy! I'm also currently running 5 IDE devices on only 2 IDE channels, which means I have to swap drives every once and a while for my reviews! :(

So yeah, do what you can, but don't neglect your personal life or the ones you love...or SLEEP! well, not TOO much anyways! (I don't say "The Digital Dolphin Burns at Midnight" for nothing you know!)

I also would be really interested in a review. It is still hard to find any information on the net about this drive. And because I also have some DVD-R problems (as I already posted here http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12478 ) I would like to read the opinion of other people (tester).
@Peter_Mann
In the meantime I contacted LG Europe with my problems. Finally last friday I got an answer which states that LG is aware of the 4x DVD-R burning problem. They advised me to use Verbatim DVD-R media for this purpose untill the solution (I assume a new firmware) will be released. It seems that the problem is specific to the European market, since (according to LG) most of the media manufacturer (including TDK) are delivering different DVD-R media under the same label (and manufacturer ID) for the European and American/Asian market. The actual firmware versions have problems with those 4x DVD-R media for the European market. Verbatim is the only manufacturer offering exactly the same media on all markets. The reason for the problems is (according LG), that 4x DVD-R media offered in Europe has the same "data layer" thickness as the 2x DVD-R media, while 4x DVD-R media on other markets has a thicker "data layer". All current firmware versions have a problem recognizing these 4x DVD-R media correctly.

Ian,

I think we can guess which review you are working on then, based on your comment.

Keep up the good work!
I'd much rather wait for a comprehensive review by you than the fluff a few of the sites like to call "reviews".

Yeah, i think so, too. Better take a little more time and make high quality reviews than fast and bad reviews :)
