In House Review - CenDyne DVR-105 4x DVD-RW

Postby Ian on Mon May 05, 2003 9:32 am

CDRLabs has taken a long over due look at CenDyne's 4x DVD-RW drive, the DVR-105. Based on Pioneer's fifth generation DVD-RW drive, the DVR-105 features 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW writing speeds, 12x DVD read speeds and support for buffer underrun protection. In this review we take a look at some of the features found on the DVR-105 and then see how it performs. Is the CenDyne DVR-105 the DVD-RW drive for you? You'll have to read the review to find out.

Ian, you wouldn't happen to be able to go into more depth on exactly what things in the documentation could be better and how? Maybe if CenDyne had more info on what you'd like to see in it, it'd happen.

From the review:

Just keep in mind that the instructions are pretty brief, so if you're looking for huge diagrams and elaborate instructions, the drive might not be for you. Personally, I wish they would have provided some more information specific to the DVR-105, but I suppose there's plenty of that on the back of the box.

I haven't verified this, but supposedly Staples has this drive on sale for $230 in the store.

The $50 rebate they have right now brings the price down to $180. If you have coupons, you could lower it even more.

I was just at my local Staples this afternoon and I can verify that they had the 4x DVD-R/RW for $229.99. I also saw that they had a 4x DVD+R/RW for $199.99. I was wondering who's drive is the DVD+R/RW drive based on? Unfortunately, I don't have a model number because they were behind glass.

If CenDyne is selling the same drive as Verbatim (CenDyne markets Verbatim's drives), its an NEC ND-1100A.

CenDyne is the company behind Verbatim's CD and DVD writers.

Verbatim has been using NEC's DVD+R/RW drive in their kits.

It's very possible that CenDyne is doing the same for their kits.

Yeah, I think everyone understands that. We were talking about the DVD+R/RW drives from CenDyne and Verbatim.

Interesting that Cendyne is making Verbatim drives.

Verbatim is a brand-name of Mitsubishi, right? And Mitsi are working with NEC to produce DVD writers. So, why are Mitsi farming out to Cendyne? Seems a little strange :-?

Unless the "Verbatim" drives aren't really Verbatim-sourced at all (and the name is just licenced to Cendyne)? Like here in the UK, where videotapes from companies like "BBC" and "Bush" (a once-huge Brit electronics company now owned by ARG) are actually marketed by a firm called "Strand". Never could understand that either.

I have heard that Verbatim is actually a subsidiary of CenDyne, at least as far as drives are concerned. I have even heard of Verbatim drives showing up in CenDyne boxes.

OK here's the way I understand it. Verbatim licensed their name to the Peripherals Group, Inc., or PGI for short. PGI markets drives, etc. Verbatim did this so they could get their own line of drives out their quickly and easily.

PGI is actually a subsidiary of CenDyne. Verbatim is NOT a subsidiary of CenDyne though.
