Pioneer DVR-107 Results

Postby dolphinius_rex on Sat Jan 31, 2004 4:11 am

The media is Ritek made, White Inkjet Printable RICOHJPN01 4x DVD+Rs. The test unit is a LiteON LDW-411s.

The testing was done at 1x for both tests:

I'm rather pleased with this test actually :) I'm looking forward to playing with some 8x DVD+Rs on Monday :D

Like I said, burning at 4x, testing at 1x. PI testing was at 8-ECC (hence the PI8), and PO testing was done at 1-ECC (Hence the PO1).

My next scan, although is not very good should surprise a lot of people.

I have successfully erased and burned a Verbatim Datalife Plus 32x CD-RW on the Pioneer DVR-107!!! The burn was done at 24x, and other options were 20x and 16x.

SmartBurn data as shown by the Pioneer DVR-107:
Code: Select all
        Drive Type = DVD DUAL
         Disc Type = ULTRA SPEED CD-RW 32X
          Material = Phase Change
           Lead In = 97:34:25
          Lead Out = 74:43:00
  Nominal Capacity = 656.40MB
Manufacturer Maybe = Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 24X (Write)

Image

Again, the test results are very poor.... but the drive doesn't even have the UltraSpeed CD-RW logo... it only has the HighSpeed CD-RW logo :o But it's good to know it can handle it! :D

They have arrived at my workplace, but I haven't bought any yet, because I didn't expect to get the DVR-107 yesterday, so I will do some testing on Monday for everyone :D

Okay, the discs are real.....

Code: Select all
        Drive Type = DVD DUAL
Disc Type = DVD+R (Single Layer)
          Disc MID = 52 49 54 45 4B 00 00 00 (RITEK...)
          Disc TID = 52 30 33 (R03)
Manufacturer Maybe = RiTEK Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 4.0X (Write)

.....But, the Pioneer 107 only sees them as 4x DVD+Rs! ARGH!

Whoe should I complain too, Pioneer or Ritek? I guess Pioneer, since so far nothing has burned at 8x on it yet

You are correct, ver. 1.05 of the A07/107D firmware seems to only support the MCC03 discs for 8X +R burning, it doesn't support the RICHOJPNR02 discs at 8X, let alone these not yet officially approved RITEKR03 discs, according to the following Japanese review:

English Translated Version of Buffalo DVM-R88FB (Pioneer 107D OEM) Review

Note: The IO DATA DVR-ABN8 model mentioned in the review is an OEM model of the NEC ND-2500A.

Hopefully Pioneer will come out with a firmware upgrade real soon to support 8x burning with this media.

It's pretty sad to have an 8x burner that will only burn at 8x on one media type made by one manufacturer... and only one of the two formats.... :(

I have sent Pioneer support an e-mail asking for an eta on 8x DVD writing support. I also told them I was quite distrought with putchasing an 8x DVD burner, and finding out it was the only 8x DVD burner that would not burn at 8x! :o (which as far as I'm concerned is true, since I can't get MCC03 media yet...)

I won't mind if it could only burn MCC 8x if it does burn them excellent !
Since there quite good to get over here. I allready seen the first metions for verbatim 8x DVD-R. Funny thing is that compannies can place orders for them but verbatim doesn't list a date for availability .(Hmm it seems they learned after the 32x CD-RW fiasco. Which seems now slowly being solved !) If people are interested then I should have even the re-order number somewhere for the 8x DVD-R disc's.

Keep in mind the following at the time the Pioneer 107 was develloped only MCC had supplied 8x media which was also approved durreing the 107 developement proces infact when the drive was just hitting the market a few other companies had there media approved by Philips.
So I don't blame them for not supporting it out of the box.

Still it's a shame that they haven't released a newer firmware but then again if you know how Pioneer tests and performs optimalisations for there drive you might rethink. I think that even a next firmware release might not solve the problems with the ritek disc's. As we have seen Pioneer seems to act strict to the rules and since ritek r03 isn't approved (yet ?). A quick new firmware release might just ignore them and would only add support for the approved +r disc's from: Philips,CMC, Ricoh, Maxell

You say you can't get MCC003 but how about Philips 081 media , which was the second approved 8x media. (Which also causes a lot of problems with most current 8x writers when we're talking about write quality!)
Small change that it might support these, but then again this media is quite rare at the moment and quite expensive.

Ritek 8x DVD+Rs are the only ones I can get right now... but if someone wants to donate 1 or 2 8x DVD+Rs of any other sort, I'll happily burn and test them for everyone :D

I'll see if I can find some alternate media, but I'm also pretty much broke for the next 2 weeks due to some unexpected monthly costs in my household...
