Need SATA DVD writer that works w/ CD Speed (Disc Quality)

I just got a new HP computer and was disappointed to find that it only has SATA connections inside, no IDE. I was planning on brining my BenQ 1640 over because I still love the drive and love its ability to run Disc Quality tests in CD Speed.

Can anyone point me to an SATA DVD writer that is capable of running Disc Quality tests in CD Speed? The list of supported drives on the CD Speed web site seems really out-of-date (the BenQ 1640 isn't even on it), and not sure what drives I should be considering.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

i don't think there is such a drive.
drives that can be used for scanning are Lite-On and BenQ. AFAIK no SATA drives from these brands.

The Sony AW-Q160A works with CD Speed but its not out yet.

i stand corrected!

Ian, have you found out which Lite-On it's based on?
is the Lite-On equivalent model announced yet or when will be?
etc.

I'm not sure if LiteON themselves know what it is yet :wink:

It's based on the 16A7L. Beyond that, I don't have any other info.

interesting model number.
all the internal DVD burners till now where xxxS, now xxxL ?
also the A, vs. P and H of current models...
no hit on '16A7L' @ cdreaks eitehr...

I'm guessing the L has something to do with its SATA interface.

I'm very surprised we haven't heard more about Lite-On's upcoming drives. I'm expecting a drive based on their 18x DVD writer this week. It will be interesting to see how it is.

I remember looking in Nero's compatibility list for hints on new drives. A quick check with Google for "LiteOn 16A7L" found only 5 hits, but 2 are interesting variations on this:
Cyberlink Labelprint now supports
Liteon SH-16A7L (S-ATA 1/2-height) (135),
Liteon SH-16A7H (P-ATA 1/2-height) (136)
and Pioneer DVR-K17LB (137)

and NTI's list of supported drives has the following LiteOn 7* models listed (other than older CD-burners):
SH-16A7H, SH-16A7L, SH-16AH7S, SH-16AL7S, SH-16AP7S, SH-16AS7S, SH-16WP7S, SH-16WS7S
SHM-166P7S, SHM-166S7S

There weren't any further hits with technical details. :o

?? I think they just mentioned all possible permutations of the drive names. We'll have to wait and see what really shows up on the shelves or as OEM.

To get back to the original question: in Europe at least, Samsung offers the SH-W163A and this should do the basic quality tests (MediaTek chipset). It doesn't support the advanced tests with DVDScan that the newer LiteOn's do, though.

Also, you always have the option of using an IDE-SATA converter- I remember someone recommending this, but don't remember any details or where that was.

Actually, I just bought one of those. Got it today, hooked up the BenQ with it, and the BIOS recognizes it fine. Windows, however, doesn't see the drive at all. And I can't get it to.

I emailed the IDE-SATA adapter company, but I'm guessing there won't be much for them to have me try.
