Was reading AV watch this morning and came across a Panasonic drive with the 16x capability of RAM and some specs

well, almost...only 8x DVD-ROM DL read. also a bit slow on reading other rw media...
but!
it says specificatiosn - tentative!
so we'll have to wait and see what the specs really are when the drive does come out.

If it's as sucky of a burner overall as the 9585 is, I'll pass.

I got the 9585 based on past good experiences with older Panasonic burners, and wanting DVD-RAM, but the thing is pretty bad (Compared to my Pioneer and Plextor).

Did anyone ever get a WORKING firmware update for the 9585s that Newegg/Chiefvalue were selling a few months back? I keep hoping something will show up so it wasn't a total waste to buy.

1°) this Panasonic SW-9586 already seen at the IFA
and,

4°) an annonced HDLS drive (something like a LG GSA 4169 ...)


Before the announcement of 16x DVD-RAM I was thinking of buying a Panasonic LF-M821 because it has the support for 5x DVD-RAM in cartridge

So could you please tell us more precisely what you dont' like about Panasonic drives compared to Pioneer, NEC or LG GSA 41xx ?

Is it only the lack in future firmwares upgrades for these Panasonic drives or is it also reliability ??
On top of that the brand Panasonic is quite hard to find in a shop (for me at least)


Note: until now Plextor was selling in Japan only a DVD-RAM burner called PX-605A
It was a "rebadged" Matshita drive
and it did not have a so good reputation among some end users:

I love my Panasonic LF-P567C slimline burner I got. It is/was an excellent burner for its time. I made the mistake (based on past good experiences with anything I bought from Panasonic) that the 9585 would be an excellent burner, and it's just kind of mediocre. It's not great with even really good media, my Pioneer does a much better job. Not horrible, but not great, PI scans, no formware updates for it, etc.

It's probably a good burner that just really needs a firmware update or two to actually live up to its potential. I think B101 helped a lot, but it doesn't seem that they've ever released one compatible with the 9585 that I bought from Newegg.

As far as the Panasonic drives go... there are a number of issues with them. Along with the lack of firmware updates, the performance just isn't on par with the drives from the competition. I can't say I was overly impressed with the writing quality of the 9585 either.

Just wonder...

The Panasonic-drives that used in their DVD-Recorders (not DVD-burners) seems to be the best of the world.

Why are their PC-drives so bad? Because of the higher speeds?

Yes I do agree that Panasonic creates a very good set top recorder but I think they put all of their effort into the home media division. Thus Panasonic isn’t very worried about the PC ODD drive market and the lack firmware development may be to blame.
