which media now that I have Yamaha F1

To all,

External Yamaha CRW-F1ZUX is on the way, after rebate I'm $155 out of pocket.

Now to the media questions.

What to buy?

Should I buy a 100 spool of something or buy in smaller quantity to see if its compatable with the drive?

I must admit I don't see the "48x Taiyo Yuden - in 100-packs for $8 (on sale at BestBuy)"........are they Fuji, Imation, or something else????

I'm looking on Best Buys web site.

Where can I get those thin white paper envelopes to keep CD's in...the ones I've seen at work have a clear window so you can see the label.

Taiyo Yuden doesn't sell media at the retail stores under their own name. All Fuji media is Taiyo Yuden. And also some memorex's are Taiyo Yuden. Just look for Made in Japan on the label and you know your getting Taiyo Yuden.

Here's the link to the 100-Pack of Fuji's for $8 after rebates. Also when you order the Fuji's, you will get 48x ones instead of the 24x spindles shown in the old pic at Best Buy's website.

OK....it was the description that threw me off...I saw

Fuji 700MB 24x CD-R Disc Spindle (100-pack)
Model: 25301472


and thought it was 24X.....how the heck would you think otherwise.....


Will I have any problems with these CDR's writing at the slower USB 1.x speeds? ( I meant to say this in my original post, that I would initially be hooking this fast drive up to a slow throughput device connection)

Does anybody foresee problems with this media.....should I buy a smaller quantity?

If you hook up the drive to USB1.1, the max write speed possible is 4x. There should be no problems with this media writing at such low speeds. Taiyo Yuden media produces the lowest amount of errors of any CD media. It is very safe to buy a 100-pack of Fuji CD's. They are of the highest quality and best media you can buy. The price of $8 just makes this deal even sweeter.

If you want to try the Disc T@2 labeling, media with dark dye gives best results. Here is a summary of the various dye types and their suitability for DiscT@2:

- Phthalocyanine (as found in Imation/CMC, Memorex/CMC, TDK/Ritek, Maxell/Ritek, etc.) is very light and the T@2 label will be barely visible if at all.

- Cyanine (as found in Fuji/TY, Memorex/TY) is a little darker and will give somewhat better results.

- Super AZO (as found in the newer, faster Verbatim DataLife Plus discs) is yet a little darker still for yet a little better results.

- AZO (just plain AZO discs as found in the older, 16x or slower Verbatim DataLife Plus discs) is the darkest of all and will give the best results of all (in terms of T@2 readability). Yamaha sells AZO discs specifically branded as DiscT@2 media:

The Yamaha branded discs aren't cheap. If I were you, I would start out with that Fuji/TY 100-pack for $8 at Best Buy as linked by BuddhaTB.

Thank you so much for all the info you all have provided me. I've posted a couple of times and everyone has been very good at helping.

I just came back from lunch and Best Buy....I got the Fuji 100 pack!!!

Now just waiting for the burner to arrive.

I looked at the compatability list before posting and it was kind of slim on the yamaha f1 as somebody noted.... but I guess you can't go wrong with the Fuji TY 48x.

One thing I haven't seen too much of (probably because I haven't looked hard enough) is CD-RW brands.

I got a 5 pack of Memorex 700mb, 80 minute, 4x multispeed with slim jewel cases for $4.99 in green packaging, made in Taiwan.

I figured since I will have the slow pipe this will do for CD-RW's.

Any other suggestions for CD-RW?

How many times will I be able to re-write?

I know Memorex 10X CD-RW discs are crap, I'm not sure about the 4X discs. I hope they are better than the 10X ones.

ALL Memorex CD-RW disc are very crappy. Just look through this thread and you'll understand what I mean.

For CD-RW disc, I would recommend Verbatim or ones made by Mitsubishi chemicals like Yamaha or TDK branded ones.

the best CDRW media IMO is Verbatim.

as for burning at slow speeds, there have been reports that burning high speed media (40x, 48x) at slow speeds results in worse quality burns than when burning it at high speed. the media is designed and optimized for high speed burning.

i don't know if this happens with your drive (F1) or media (TY).
you'll just have to try and see.

Ritek made 12x CDRW disc have not problems at all
