Sony DDU1621 dvd-r, dvd-rw & dvd+rw compatible

Postby Halc on Thu Jan 01, 1970 12:30 am

I loaned my Sony DDU1621 to my friend who has Panasonic, Philips and Pioneer DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+RW recorders for compatibility testing.

Guess what?

Sony DDU1621 plays all the above three formats faultlessly.

We could not verify DVD+R yet as we can't get hold of DVD+R media.

On the whole this is great news though as I imagined only the officially dvd-multi capable readers (like upcoming LiteOn LTD-165) would be able to do this.

The *ONLY* downfall with the Sony DDU1621 I've been able to find to this date is that - for some reason - it cannot do error correction on DVD discs. It does error correction on cd-rom and cd-audio perfectly, but not on dvd-video discs.

This drive just keeps on stunning me: most silent, most accurate DAE ripper, reasonably fast DAE and now DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+RW support.

cheers,
Halc

What does it mean "cannot do error correction on DVD discs".
I've always thought that dvd movies are on ISO or UDF
file systems. Without error correction, this whole thing
cannot work, I mean any little scratch and the disk is
unreadable.

I was thinking about buying sony, but I usually borrow used
disks, and now I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

German Techchannel.de did a test with DVD-movie discs on the drive's error correction. Sony DDU1621 does not support any kind of error correction with movies - at least according to that test.

We also tested this in practise with a friend of mine by placing the Sony DDU1621 into Nintaus DVD player and played a DVD-movie that has pressed errors on it (from bad manufacturing).

Upon encountering the first error the player freezes and has to be powered down.

With other drives inside Nintaus, they may exhibit some visual anomalies on screen (due to not being able to correct all errors fully), but they do continue to read.

These two things lead me to believe that DDU1621 does not do error correction on DVD-discs.

Mine freezes during the second spin down.
I insert the DVD, it spins up.
I open WinDVD, the playback begins
It spins down, no problem
It spins down again, and it freezes.

It seems other users encouter the same problem : Chromium @ hardware.fr (http://forum.hardware.fr/forum2.php3?po ... h=&subcat=) : "the first one I got, same problem as you, return to the store. The second one works quite well, exept it sometimes stops then play again", and JeanLuc @ EAC (http://www.digital-inn.de/showthread.php?threadid=11812) : "I went into the store to buy and the folks there asked me if I'm crazy to buy the world's worst DVD drive ..."

Definitely not a drive to play DVDs.

Hey Halc, what brand of DVD-R did you use that worked in the drive? I've tried "That's" and Fujifilm to no avail. Light just blinks while it searches for the leadin information.

I'm convinced the right brand will work. If you know what you used I'll buy it and confirm.

Sorry, it was ages ago and I don't have that drive connected anymore (it was in my work machine). Sorry!

I'll ask if my friend knows, he did the testing.
