10 May 2012

kingston_svp200_ssd.pngCDRLabs finishes up the week with a review of Kingston's 90GB SSDNow V+200 solid state drive. Designed to meet the needs of both business and home users, the V+200 combines exceptional quality and performance with an affordable price. The drive is powered by LSI's SandForce SF-2281 processor and features a SATA 6GB/s interface, automatic encryption and DuraClass technology. The V+200 also uses asynchronous NAND flash to deliver up to 535MB/s read and 485MB/s write speeds as well as a maximum of 60,000 4KB random write IOPS.

tdk_smg3b_msata_ssd.pngTDK Corporation has developed the mSATA type SSD (Solid- State Drive) SMG3B series with support for 3 Gbps serial ATA. The products will be available from July 2012.

The SMG3B series drives with mSATA interface measure only about 30 mm x 50 mm and offer storage capacities up to 64 GB. High-speed mSATA implementation achieves actual read access speed of 170 MB per second. The mSATA standard, established by the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA IO), was initially adopted mainly for digital consumer products such as tablet computers and netbooks. Because of its space-saving advantages, the standard is now gaining increased acceptance also for social infrastructure equipment and smart grid applications. Products designed for such uses must fulfill high requirements not only with regard to data reliability but also in terms of endurance, data security, reliability monitoring, and similar aspects.

The SMG3B series uses the TDK original SSD controller GBDriver RS3 , featuring powerful error correction expandable to 44-bit ECC. Data reliability has been significantly enhanced thanks to a sophisticated power interruption data preservation algorithm and the auto refresh function. Another special feature is the data randomizer that varies data patterns during writing to reduce the risk of bit errors.

adata_premier_pro_sp900.png

ADATA Technology today announces the launch of a complete lineup of expanded capacity solid state drives. The new SSD range includes the Premier Pro SP900 and Premier SP800, both which use new optimized firmware to utilize greater storage capacity of the NAND Flash components.

Premier Pro SP900
Boasting impressive performance numbers, the Premier Pro SP900 also offers a competitive price advantage. Maximum sequential read and write speeds are 550/520 MB per second, with maximum random 4k write speeds of 85,000 IOPS. Capacities of 64, 128 and 256 GB make the SP900 an outstanding option for upgrading notebooks that are compatible with the SATA 6 Gb per second specification.

Premier SP800
The Premier SP800 is a SATA II compliant SSD that also makes efficient use of the Flash storage capacity, allowing for capacities of 32 GB and 64 GB. Max sequential read and write speeds are 280/260 MB per second, and max random 4k write speeds are up to 44,000 IOPS. It enters the market as a high value entry-level solid state drive for those who are just now making the transition from mechanical drives.

07 May 2012

OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today introduced release candidate firmware v1.4RC, which dramatically improves the performance of its Vertex 4 SATA 3.0 Series SSDs. Most notably, v1.4RC nearly doubles sequential write performance for lower capacity models, significantly boosts sequential read performance at low queue depths, and improves general performance under real-world workloads comprising mixed reads and writes.

Despite already achieving breakthrough levels of performance with its flagship Vertex 4, OCZ has taken aggressive strides to further distance itself from the competition and to maintain its undisputed leadership in SSD technology. Compared to Vertex 4's original firmware version v1.3, v1.4RC more than doubles sequential write performance of the 128GB model and boosts the 256GB model from 380MB/s to 465MB/s.  These dramatic gains were achieved through proprietary algorithms which orchestrate the sequence of physical NAND programming operations to ensure that each NAND device is optimally utilized at all times. For the mainstream user, entry-level capacities of Vertex 4 can now achieve nearly the same sequential write performance as the industry-leading 512GB model at a mere fraction of the cost.
