CMC Magnetics, the largest Taiwan-based producer of blank optical discs, is planning annual equipment maintenance in the first quarter of 2008, with the stoppage of production intended to also help avoid a possible oversupply of CD-R and DVD+R/-R discs in the traditional off-season, according to the company. Ritek, the second largest maker, indicated that it is considering whether to make a similar move and will reach a decision soon.Second tier manufacturers like Prodisc, Gigastorage and Lead Data are also planning on or considering doing equipment maintenance during the first quarter. CMC has not yet decided when to start the planned maintenance nor the time length, with the decision hinging on the receipt of orders, the company pointed out. CMC has production bases in Taiwan, China, Thailand and Hong Kong. Three of these, excluding the one in Thailand, were put into annual maintenance in a period around the Lunar New Year in 2007, the company indicated. Ritek also took maintenance measures around the same time, according to the company.

I've speculated on my blog that Microsoft may be preparing to license the Xbox gaming platform to consumer-electronics companies.While Brier Dudley is usually a pretty reliable source for Microsoft related news, this nothing more than a rumor at this point. In particular, Microsoft could work with Toshiba to develop a digital video recorder with a hard-drive, high-definition HD-DVD drive and Xbox gaming capabilities. They're already allied against Sony and other backers of the Blu-ray DVD format, and Toshiba could help Xbox finally penetrate the Japanese market.
Microsoft could also make a splash by announcing plans to give the Xbox 360 an internal HD-DVD drive, putting it on par with Sony's PlayStation 3 that has a built-in Blu-ray drive.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced Cruzer Titanium Plus, a USB flash drive that offers automatic online backup for every file copied to the drive, giving users true peace of mind. Cruzer Titanium Plus will be featured at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show from Jan. 7 to 10, where SanDisk will be demonstrating products at Booth #30768, South Hall 3, in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“ABI Research expects high-definition drives to bring in revenues of about $2 billion by 2012,” says principal analyst Steve Wilson. “Of that, about two-thirds will be accounted for by universal drives, which can play either format. Few universal drives are sold today, partly because of their higher price. But those prices will fall to about the same as Blu-ray players by 2009, and we forecast universal player sales to exceed Blu-ray the following year.”
