CyberLink Corp. (5203.TW), innovative solution provider for the connected digital lifestyle, today announced the release of CyberLink Media Server 2 and CyberLink SoftDMA 2, home networking applications for remotely accessing and sharing high-definition videos, photos, and music throughout the digital home.

Media Server turns a home PC into a network server for digital video, photo, and music content, which can be accessed and played by media players—such as SoftDMA—that are connected across a DLNA/UPnP network. Media Server, which is certified for the DLNA 1.5 logo, supports file transcoding, features admission controls, and includes quality of service (QoS) technology for optimizing playback quality.

SoftDMA allows the streaming of digital video, photo, and music content by automatically locating media servers connected to a user’s network. New features allow the downloading of files across a network to the local hard drive, as well as the playback of high-definition content.

Mobile professionals no longer have to worry about obstructed USB ports or toting numerous USB cables with IOGEAR's new 3-Port USB 2.0 Mobile Hub with Built-in Mini-USB Cable (GUH276). The product comes with an integrated mini-USB cord and three evenly-spaced, upward-facing USB ports that prevent blockage to other outlets when a user connects a large dongle or flash drive to another port.

For students on-the-go on campus or traveling professionals, the product has a built-in mini-USB cable to charge and transfer content from their cell phones, MP3 players and other USB devices without needing an extra cord. This eliminates the need for users to take several cables wherever they go. The cord easily tucks away in a ridge along the side of the device for convenience.

Road warriors who don't have enough USB ports on their laptops can benefit from the 3-Port USB 2.0 Mobile Hub with Built-in Mini-USB Cable's convenient design that aligns three high-speed USB 2.0 ports along the top of the product with ample space between to ensure clear entry to every port. It integrates a regular USB cord that also easily clips along the edge of the device.

Micron Technology announced this week that it will be restructuring its memory operations.  Due to declining customer demand and product oversupply, the company will be discontinuing the production of NAND flash memory at its Boise facility. As a result, Micron plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 15 percent over the next two years.

In response to a challenging global environment for technology products,  Micron Technology, Inc., today announced a restructuring of its memory operations.

The combination of declining customer demand and product oversupply in the marketplace has driven selling prices for NAND flash memory significantly below manufacturing costs, particularly for 200 millimeter (mm) manufacturing lines. As a result, IM Flash Technologies (IMFT), a joint venture between Micron and Intel Corporation, will discontinue the supply of NAND flash memory from Micron’s Boise facility. The NAND operation shutdown will reduce IMFT’s NAND flash production by approximately 35,000 wafers (200mm) per month.

As part of the restructuring, Micron plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 15 percent during the next two years. The majority of the workforce reductions, which will begin with a voluntary program, will occur in Boise as a result of the NAND operation shutdown. Micron is committed to assisting employees affected by the workforce reductions and is providing severance and outplacement services.

Verbatim sent out a press release this morning, announcing the world's first LightScribe 8x DVD+R Double Layer (DL) discs. Available in the U.S. in November, these new discs are produced with LightScribe Media Version 1.2 coating technology and are fully compatible with LightScribe-enabled drives and software.

lightscribe logo square.jpgLeveraging many of the same technologies that set the standard for high-speed DVD+R Double Layer (DL) disc performance, reliability and compatibility, Verbatim® Americas, LLC, announced today the worlds first LightScribe® 8X DVD+R Double Layer (DL) discs. At 8X speed, the industrys fastest DVD DL burning speed, an entire 8.5GB single-sided disc can be filled to capacity in 15 minutes¹ or less. Verbatim will begin shipping LightScribe 8X DVD+R DL discs in November.

Verbatim and its parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), have consistently been at the forefront in developing DVD+R DL technologies and LightScribe media coating. Verbatim was also the first company to release DVD+R DL discs and LightScribe media worldwide.

LightScribe certified, Verbatims new double layer media is fully compatible with LightScribe-enabled drives, duplicators and the latest software licensed by Hewlett-Packard Company (HP). Verbatims new DVD+R DL discs deliver LightScribe direct-to-disc labeling quality and convenience without requiring any software or firmware upgrades.

A rumor surfaced this week, claiming that Microsoft was preparing a Blu-ray addon for the Xbox 360. According to the report, Microsoft has contracted with Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) to manufacture the drive and that it would be priced between $100-$150. Microsoft has been quick to squash these rumors. In a statement issued to Edge Online, the company said that it has no plans to offer a Blu-ray addon and that it will instead focus on games.

"As we’ve said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on," the firm told Edge. "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

While I think there is some truth to these rumors, Microsoft isn't going to release a Blu-ray addon for the Xbox 360 until they are good and ready.
