superspeed usb.jpgNEC Electronics today announced the availability of a Universal Serial Bus (USB) 3.0 system-on-a-chip (SOC) design solution that customers can use to kick start the development of custom USB 3.0 products. Leveraging NEC Electronics’ design, implementation and manufacturing strengths as a leading integrated device manufacturer (IDM), the SOC design solution helps to reduce risk, improve efficiency and speed time to market, while allowing customers to focus on developing their own differentiated logic.

The SOC design solution features NEC Electronics’ USB 3.0 intellectual property (IP) core, which is fully interoperable with the company’s recently USB-IF-certified USB 3.0 host controller (part number µPD720200) and also backward compatible with previous versions of the USB standard. NEC Electronics expects rapid adoption of the solution by customers developing mass storage, display and video applications, especially as the need to transfer larger and larger amounts of information from PCs to external hard-drives, portable electronics devices, and flash-based drives continues to grow.

Blu-ray enabled Nimbie NB12BR provides users new options for data storage and back up. A single layer Blu-ray discs can hold up to 25GB and 50GB on a dual-layer disc, offering the possibility to back up large amount of data on fewer optical storage media. The arrival of Nimbie NB12BR is also an exciting news for video makers, making it possible for them to burn high-definition (HD) videos.

Nimbie NB12BR has eliminated the traditional robotic arm to increase the unit’s efficiency in disc handling. Acronova Technology introduced a new top-feeding loader and un-loader which shortens cycle time and allows unlimited disc refill to any on-going disc duplication project.

Seagate Technology today announced worldwide availability of the Seagate Secure™ Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) option across its portfolio of enterprise-class hard drives. Products with the Seagate Secure option include: Savvio™ 15K.2, Savvio 10K.3, Constellation™ and Cheetah™ 15K.7 drives.

These enterprise-class products are an extension of Seagate’s first-to-market leadership with Seagate Secure Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology, designed to deliver data-at-rest security for servers and storage systems.

“Self-Encrypting Drives are one of the easiest, most cost-effective security measures companies can implement,” said Eric Ouellet, vice president at Gartner. “The use of SEDs provides businesses with complete data-at-rest protection against information breaches that can occur in drives and systems that have been repurposed, decommissioned, disposed of, sent for repair, misplaced or stolen. Because all disk media eventually leaves a company’s control, the use of SEDs ensures that data is protected at these critical stages of a system’s life cycle.”

Density Dynamics, a majority owned subsidiary of Speedus Corp., announced today it has released a new DRAM solid state drive (DR-SSD) designed exclusively with DRAM memory.

DR-SSD technology is now available in the newly available DRAM Jet.io(TM). The Density Dynamics proprietary design utilizes DRAM memory for "hot" core storage functions in a uniquely compact 3.5-inch form factor alleviating I/O bottlenecks using dramatically lower power than other storage solutions.

"We use DRAM as the core of our solid state drive because it doesn't degrade like flash based SSDs used by most SSD vendors. Prospective customers have told us of their real world experience with flash SSD degradation for high volume random write (w-ops) applications. DRAM Jet.io targets customer applications that do not require a non-volatile solution. No other SSD suppliers have a 100% DRAM SSD in a 3.5" form factor available today," said Dave Wilkerson, CTO of Density Dynamics. "While the market for SSDs has grown dramatically, the focus on flash based solutions has left many customers wondering about the durability limitations of flash as we have explained in our recently published white paper," added Wilkerson

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC), a U.S. marketing arm of Toshiba Corporation for electronic components, today announced a series of solid state drive (SSD) modules using the latest generation Toshiba 32nm MLC NAND flash, at Intel Developers Forum 2009. The Toshiba SG2 modules are offered in two types, one based on the new low-profile mini-SATA (mSATA) interface standard and the other a Half-Slim type, which uses a SATA connector. The drives are available in 30GB and 62GB modules. Volume production will start in October.

The two types of modules, each smaller than a business card, provide greater design flexibility and save space and cost compared to SSDs with hard disk drive form factors and cases. The 62GB module is only one seventh the volume and one eighth the weight of a 2.5-inch form factor SSD, and consumes half the power. With interface speeds up to 3 gigabits per second (Gb/s), a maximum sequential read speed of 180 megabytes per second (MBps) and a maximum sequential write speed of 70MBps, the modules will help bring the performance advantages of SSDs to notebooks, portable electronics and embedded systems. An advanced controller features a translation mode, which enables any drive configuration, and the drive supports 28-bit LBA (Logical Block Address) mode commands and 48-bit LBA mode commands. Multi-word DMA, Ultra-DMA modes and Advanced PIO commands are supported. The drives have an optional capability for secure Full Disk Encryption (FDE) backup that prevents unauthorized data access.
