Synology today announced the Beta release of DiskStation Manager 7.1, giving system admins a chance to test out the expanded functionality. DSM 7.1 further builds on the massive platform upgrade introduced with DSM 7.0 and introduces many innovative enhancements designed to address IT challenges.

"DSM 7.1 is an important evolution for one of the most widely used data management platforms in the industry," System Product Management Team Manager, Shamrock Ko said. "Building on the solid foundation we set with 7.0, we can now focus on addressing the more specific challenges that our customers identify, during their day-to-day use of the platform."

Core storage enhancements
DSM 7.1 brings key improvements to the storage management experience. Starting with the introduction of file aggregation portals, it adds SMB DFS capability to enable administrators to link together multiple Synology systems. This provides more convenient file access for end users by removing the need to remember separate addresses.

The new user interface introduced in 7.0 has been further optimized by consolidating background tasks into an administrator-friendly overview. This increases greater transparency into what is happening on the system, even across different user accounts. For Synology High Availability clusters, users can now view and manage drives on both systems from a single instance of Storage Manager for easier maintenance and management.

QNAP Systems, Inc., today announced that it has extended the end date of Technical Support and Security Updates for some End of Life (EOL) models, helping users to defend against evolving security threats and allowing users to have more time to implement device upgrades.

EOL models may lack computational capabilities, be short on operational memory, be unable to receive up-to-date component drivers, or possess other technical constraints or deprecated technology. Due to these reasons, QNAP normally maintains security updates for 4 years after a product passes its EOL date. As a special effort to help users protect their devices from today’s security threats, QNAP has extended security updates for some EOL models till October 2022.

The extended end date of Technical Support and Security Updates applies as below:

CPU Architecture Last Supported NAS OS Version for the Model Extended Date
x86 64-bit models
or ARM models that support one of the NAS OS versions on the right.
QTS 4.2.6
QTS 4.3.3
QTS 4.3.6
QTS 4.4.1
Effectively till October 2022

What do the MP3 players of the 1990s and today’s smartphones have in common? Neither would exist were it not for NAND flash memory, an innovation whose influence has reverberated throughout the decades. KIOXIA America, Inc. today announced that it has reached a new milestone – 2022 marks the 35th anniversary of the company’s invention of NAND flash memory.

kioxia 35th nand

Back in 1987, it would have been hard to imagine all of the ways that this then brand-new technology would impact the world. NAND flash memory has ushered in entire new technological eras, and obsoleted technologies and products that had been in use for years - changing our lives in countless ways. Since starting at zero 35 years ago, the NAND flash market has grown to $70B1. In terms of die density, flash memory has grown from 4Mb to 1.33Tb – a 333,000x increase2. To put this exponential growth in perspective, in the 1990s, the largest available density flash memory could hold 1/8 of a photo. Flash forward to today, where the largest available die density is a whopping 1.33Tb – and capable of storing 39,000 photos.
