Moser Baer has launched India's first credit-card shaped USB flash drive called Moser Baer Zap. The pocket flash drive is akin to a credit card and fits easily in wallets, card holders, files and folders owing to its ultra-slim size and shape. During pilot tests, it has been proved to be very convenient and useful to carry and store.

According to Deepak Shetty, Sr. Vice President, Domestic Sales & Marketing, Moser Baer, "Most of the players in the flash memory segment have been experimenting with sizes and shapes. We have noted that an interesting shape may sometimes be inconvenient to the users when it is not traceable and gets lost easily. This holds quite true for the users who are always on-the go and need pen drives almost on a daily basis. Moser Baer Zap not only scores high on the convenience factor but also on the technology, making it a perfect offering in the 2 GB- above pen drive segment. It is a boon for the forgetful users saving them a lot of trouble."

The credit card shape lends credence and significance to the flash drive making people little more cautious and careful in using and keeping it safely. After all, data is as important as any other valuable matter.

Western Digital, the world's leader in digital storage solutions, has announced that it is offering to customers of its WD Sentinel DX4000 storage server an offsite data storage service that improves data protection for the small business owners who rely on WD Sentinel to protect their precious business information. WD partnered with KeepVault®, which was recently added to the AuthenTec® line of services, to serve WD's Sentinel small office storage server customers.

WD Sentinel storage servers act as an on-site cloud storage solution for small to medium-sized businesses (SMB). The addition of KeepVault provides an integrated offsite backup solution for SMBs' most important information, providing secure offsite disaster protection. The service integrates seamlessly into the administration dashboard and the user can choose to compress and or encrypt data while backing it up to the cloud, allowing for improved data transfers with increased security. Data from WD Sentinel can be backed-up to KeepVault either real time or as per a user-defined backup schedule and the administrator can choose to throttle the bandwidth to manage network performance, thus providing the SMB a hands-free, peace-of-mind off-site data protection system.

"In the event of a natural or man-made disaster, an SMB could lose everything if its place of business were compromised," said Thomas Gallivan, vice president of marketing for WD's SMB solutions group. "By adding KeepVault to the WD Sentinel product, we have provided our customers with an additional tool for protecting their businesses with a system that provides seamless backup and full data restoration, ensuring that an SMB has the insurance to get their business up and running in the event of a crisis."

wd logo.jpgWestern Digital Corp. today reported that it has reached an agreement with Toshiba Corporation to divest certain assets to address the requirements of regulatory agencies that have conditionally approved or are continuing to review the company's planned acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST). The asset package covered by the agreement will enable Toshiba to manufacture and sell 3.5-inch hard drives for the desktop and consumer electronics markets and will enhance its ability to manufacture and sell 3.5-inch hard drives for near-line (business critical) applications. The divestiture transaction is subject to review by regulatory agencies in certain jurisdictions.

WD also reported that it has agreed, subject to completion of the divestiture transaction, to purchase Toshiba Storage Device (Thailand) Company Limited (TSDT). TSDT manufactured hard drives but has not resumed operations after the recent Thailand flooding. The principal assets of TSDT are its Thailand property, facilities and employees. Subject to completion of the transaction, WD plans to integrate these facilities and employees into its Thailand operations. The financial terms of the two agreements were not disclosed.

The closing of the transactions with Toshiba is conditioned on WD's closing of its planned acquisition of HGST, which remains subject to several closing conditions, including the receipt of certain remaining antitrust approvals. Subject to obtaining these approvals, the company is targeting the transactions with Toshiba to close in March 2012.

Corporate and customer data are the lifeline of any company − to be safeguarded at all times and handled cautiously. Data breach trends and recent studies, such as the Ponemon Institute’s 2011 report, The State of USB Security, indicate that data breaches continue to occur far more frequently than they should and unsecured USB Flash drives remain a leading culprit. Additionally, failure to protect data can expose a company to a host of negative consequences including non-compliance, fines, financial loss and lack of customer confidence and trust.
