Enabled with key technology partners, WD's prototype introduces the new SATA Express interface, a form of PCI Express technology, which is offered on recently launched Intel series-9 chipset motherboard platforms. The SATA Express interface provides a roadmap for faster speeds, lower power consumption and increased flexibility for future OEM designs.
The road to the world's first demonstration of SATA Express has been in development for almost 3 years. In 2011, SATA-IO, the group responsible for charting the future of SATA, announced that it was developing a new specification that would fundamentally change the core technology behind SATA by melding it with the more advanced PCI Express computer interface. In 2013, the SATA Express specification was announced; and just one year later, WD and selected partners have realized a prototype of what is expected to be the next generation of storage technology.
By moving to PCI Express, the industry marries the world's most popular storage bus with the world's most popular computer bus. This union provides a solid growth path to innovate new capability, while preserving the ability to plug legacy SATA drives into new SATA Express based computers. Toshiba Corporation’s Semiconductor & Storage Products Company today announced that it will launch the MC04ACA series, Toshiba’s first enterprise capacity hard disk drive (HDD) optimized for servers supporting cloud-based applications and analytic workloads. With a 3.5-inch form factor, the MC04ACA series delivers up to 5TB of storage with 7,200 rotations per minute (RPM) performance, reducing storage latency and making the MC04ACA series suitable for workloads and storage requirements generated by cloud computing. Mass production shipment in the Japanese market will start from the end of May.
The MC04ACA series is available in 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, and 5TB capacities and supports cloud use-case workloads of up to 180TB per year. The MC04ACA series supports 1TB per platter areal density, thus saving rack space and reducing the footprint and operational burden of cloud workload servers and storage systems. Toshiba’s purpose-built line of 3.5-inch HDDs are available in capacities up to 4 TB. The 6Gbit/s SATA drives spin at 7,200rpm and support the industry-standard 512B sector lengths with rotational vibration (RV) compensation to keep performance under multiple HDD configuration, making the MD03ACA-V series suited for customers looking for 24/7 video surveillance storage. Mass production shipment in the Japanese market starts from this month.
