SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) and Sony Corporation today announced the joint development of two expanded formats that will shape the flash memory landscape for years to come. "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity (Tentative name)" expands the "Memory Stick PRO" format series to achieve a maximum storage capacity of 2-terabytes (TB), while the "Memory Stick HG Micro" format enables a maximum data-transfer speed of 60 megabytes per second (MB/s), making it one of the fastest-smallest memory card formats to date. Format licensing corresponding to the "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity" and the "Memory Stick HG Micro" is scheduled to start in 2009.
Add a commentTo achieve capacities of 2, 4 and 8GB in such an ultra-small, ultra portable form factor, Verbatim Store 'n' Go Micro USB drives feature new system-in-package (SIP) technology. SIP technology encapsulates all of the electronic components into a single miniaturized and sealed unit. As a result, the tiny drives resist water, dust, physical shock, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and are small enough and tough enough to take almost anywhere.
Add a commentSamsung announced today that it has developed a 100GB solid state drive (SSD) for the enterprise market. Thanks to a sophisticated 8-channel controller, improved NAND flash and special drive firmware, this new 2.5-inch SSD is capable of processing IOPS more than ten times faster than the fastest 15K rpm SAS hard drive.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today at the Storage Visions 2009 Conference here that it has developed a 100 gigabyte (GB) solid state drive for use in servers for applications such as video on demand, streaming media content delivery, internet data centers, virtualization and on-line transaction processing.
As an alternative to traditional 15K rpm hard disk drives (HDDs), the new performance-optimized 100GB Enterprise SSD can process IOPS (input/output per second) more than 10 times faster than the fastest 15K rpm SAS HDD available for transactional data workloads, with a random read speed of 25K and a random write speed of 6K. The new drive can process as much as 100 times the number of IOPS per watt as a 15K rpm 2.5-inch SAS HDD in applications where higher performance and lower power consumption are both needed.
Add a commentThe next-generation SDXC (eXtended Capacity) memory card specification, announced today at the 2009 International CES, dramatically improves consumers' digital lifestyles by providing the portable storage and speed needed to store weeks of high-definition video, years of photo collections and months of music to mobile phones, cameras and camcorders, and other consumer electronic devices. The new SDXC specification provides up to 2 terabytes storage capacity and accelerates SD interface read/write speeds to 104 megabytes per second this year, with a road map to 300 megabytes per second.
The SDXC specification, developed by the SD Association, leapfrogs memory card interface speeds while retaining the world-leading SD interface. Specifications for the open standard will be released in the first quarter of 2009. SDHC, Embedded SD and SDIO specifications will also benefit from the new SD interface speeds.
