yamaha cd-rw 8424E PROBLEM PLEASE HELP

Help.

Just upgraded my computer,motherboard Gigabyte Ga-7n400 Pro without the raid cpu Athlon 2600 ram 512m ddr. OSystem XP Pro
done all updates etc.Everything is listed in Device Manager with no
problems shown.My Dvd drive works fine,but the Yamaha cd-rw will not
work.Tray will not eject.but the small orange power light is on.But the drive will open and close on boot up.And if I right click on the drive in
my computer,to explore I get drive inaccessible I/O error.My firmware is
J ,can anyone help this drive was OK,when using M.E .And drive is not
recognized with NERO.

Welcome to CDRLabs, Padi!

Did you check to make sure that the drive jumpers are set correctly? If the jumpers are set correctly, try re-seating the IDE connector that attaches to the CD-RW drive.

Thanks for your reply.the jumpers are set the same, as before.I
changed motherboard, just reconnected cables.Checked cable its ok,
tight fit.my dvd drive slave is working ok .Before I changed M/board
and o/system all was ok used clone,and nero without any problems

This problem could be caused by a damaged IDE cable, so you might want to try replacing it.

Also, you might want to boot from a bootable floppy disk and try to access the drive from DOS. I'd suggest that you try using a Win98 boot disk; you can download a program to make one here.

Thanks for your reply,tried new cable,checked jumpers,Yamaha master
DVD drive slave.But will still not work,the drive will work when not in
Windows on boot up will open, and eject,and the disk light seeks for a disk
But once you are in to windows XP pro,power light on but will not open.And not seen by burning software,clone or Nero.In device manager
all OK,its like if window have locked the drive.I have a external cd-rw drive firewire that is ok.Its all very strange,that it will not work.

Did you try my suggestion above about creating a bootable floppy disk and trying to access the drive when in DOS?

Hi.
Yes in dos drive open and shuts,but when you get into Windows will not
open, or close.Sometimes if I press eject,the green seek light comes on and then stays on.In device manager, drive is fully named ,and working.
Right click on IDE controller Primary both H/Drives ultra 100.Secondary
slave bios default ultra 33,Master pio mode.IDE controller NVIDIA NFORCE 2(TM) SPP/IGP ATA Controller.When I disabled the Yamaha drive
and rebooted,in my secondary IDE controller in D/manager nothing at all showing all blank.Enabled Yamaha drive,reboot everything back as before

Can you actually read a disc from the drive in DOS?

In dos can read disc,Could it be that I installed the burning software that came with the drive,it was on my old M.E. system Easy cd Creator 4 did
not use it much preferred Nero or Clone.On the old system,everything was
working fine.But have not installed Creator 4 on present system.Thanks

I think I might have found something,if I right click Yamaha drive
properties on the top Auto play,Hardware.Do the same on my Firewire
cd-rw drive on top Auto play,hardware,sharing recording.So I think windows is not recognizing the drive as a recorder.But would that stop the
drive from ejecting.In the tools option in windows media player all cd drives are listed.But in Nero and clone only DVD + samsung fire wire cdrw
But Yamaha just cd.

It does appear that Windows isn't recognizing the drive properly. BTW, don't install Easy CD Creator 4; it doesn't get along well with Windows XP.

Here's something you can try: Go into Device Manager (right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, go to Hardware tab, click Device Manager), find your secondary IDE channel (or whichever one the CD-RW drive is attached to), right-click on the secondary IDE channel, and click "Uninstall". Once this has completed, reboot the PC. Note: It may not be a good idea to try this if the CD-RW is on the same IDE channel as your main hard drive, but it's fine if the CD-RW is on a different IDE channel than your main hard drive.

When I right click on the ide atapi controller. you can only uninstall
the both channels. Only one box comes up with primary and secondary
tabs on top.Don't think XP likes this drive which in computer terms is quite
old approx 4 years.Primary 2 X 60 GIG H/D Secondry dvd slave yam

Do you have the NForce IDE drivers installed? They often cause problems; just use the Microsoft IDE drivers that are built in to Windows.

Yes I am using the drivers that came with the M/Board,but drivers are
Microsoft certified.I have found something,on Microsoft knowledge base
Article Q316529.But I do not fancy messing with Registry,and if I disable
the Yamaha drive. loose all options in the secondary IDE FOR DMA etc.
All boxes are Grey.I took drive out ,and put it in a Friends PC Win 98se
Drive worked perfect.It must be a compatibility problem,the drive is not
on Microsoft's list.But still cannot understand if it recognizes the drive as a
cd rom instead of a cd-rw,why wont it work.I am thinking of getting a dual
DVD cdr-rw,could you recommend a good all-round drive.The wonder of
Windows.... Thanks for your help

Even though your IDE drivers are "MS certified", use the MS ones anyway. It is a well-known fact that the NForce drivers often cause problems.

Lots of drives aren't on the MS list, but they work fine. I doubt it is a compatibility problem with the OS; some driver is probably causing problems. I'd recommend that you revert to the MS IDE drivers.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend a DVD recorder because I haven't used one yet because the prices are still too high for me. However, some possibilities are the Plextor 708A and the Lite-On LDW-411S.

I have fixed the problem it was the Nvidia IDE drivers.This first time
when I uninstalled,the Nvidia driver for the M.S IDE driver, it did not work.So I just rolled back,to the Nvidia driver.Then updated driver with wizard picked driver Standard IDE driver reboot.Checked drive pushed
eject drive opened closed,a good sign.Looked in my burning software yam
drive is OK.Check read data yes,done a burn yes all OK.But windows xp
still does not recognise drive as CD-RW only CD.I think Nvidia should get
their act together,and stop using us to test there SH*TY IDE drivers.The
standard M/S drivers seem slightly faster.Thanks for your help....

You're welcome; I'm glad to hear that everything's working now.

I don't know if NVidia is even using their own IDE drivers any more; they have dropped them for at least some versions of their driver packages.

Edit: XP doesn't always seem to recognize drives as CD-Recorders, but as long as your burning software does, you'll be fine.
