Become a 48*24*48 and did they acheive this trough a firware upgrade. Most sites that are selling them are selling them as the 16 RW but the samsung sites lists it as 24* RW

I checked that. Some online retailers are selling a 48*16*48 drive. That one used to be on the site and now it has been replaced by the 48*24*48. was this a firmware upgrade or is this a brand new drive and they dropped the 16* RW drive.

The 48x16x48 is still on the Samsung site:

http://www.samsungelectronics.com/odd/cdrw/sw_248b.html

The only difference in the model numbers is the final letter: SW-248B for the 16x rewriter, SW-248F for the 24x rewriter.

I don't know whether a simple firmware update will do the transformation, but I wouldn't be surprised. Dhc014 or Kennyshin probably know better.

For what it is worth, there is a firmware update for the 24x 248F dated December 10, 2002 on the site, so it must be at least that old. In addition, the latest firmware update for the 16x 248B is dated January 3, 2003 - just a couple of days ago:

I'm not sure if their firmwares are interchangable or not, but I know the drives aren't Lite-ON's. Someone with the drive will have to play with it. Since they offer separate firmware upgrades for the drives, it would make sense that there is no firmware from Samsung which increases the RW speed like what TDK did for their Lite-ON based 4800B.

If anyone has the 48x16x48 firmwares backed up from their TDK 4800B, please send them to me...

The firmwares for the SW-248B and SW-248F are not interchangeable. The SW-248B uses the ExacLink buffer underrun protection (Oak Technology's chipset), and the SW-248F uses the JustLink buffer underrun protection (Ricoh's chipset).
My solution to the Plextor vs. Lite-On debate: Buy 'em both! :)
