If you were to buy a CD-ROM what would be your choice. Something with good if not excellent DAE, something thats fast, ok something thats quiet but thats not a must.

CD-RW drives often read data and rip audio better than CD-ROM drives; maybe another CD-RW drive (such as an LTR-52327S) would be a good choice. You can get an LTR-52327S for between $40 and $45 at www.newegg.com.

Asus CD-S52 (or maybe it's CD-S520 ?)
a very good CDROM drive, search for posts about in this forum (the CDROM forum) you'll find plenty of favorable opinions about it.

Lite On/JLMS 166S: Great rip speed, great read quality, and, it can read DVDs. Plus it's only a little more than $30 at newegg. If you don't want/need DVD, just grab a Lite-On CD-RW drive-they're cheap and fast, with great rip quality.
