What's the difference between these two models?

Postby Har on Wed Aug 27, 2003 2:11 pm

I'm looking for DVD writer and liked what I saw on the sony review what's the difference between these two models?
Sony dru-510a and Sony dw-u10a
Thanks!

By the way I still have doubts is this the moment to buy a DVD writer? I don't really need the 4,7 GB but since I have to buy a burner thought I would spend a little more money and buy a DVD one instead of a CD burner am I right?

DRU-510A = retail model with shiny, silver front. Sony offers firmware updates for this drive.
DW-U10A = OEM model with plain, white front. No firmware updates for this drive.

It is possible to "hack" the DW-U10A and put a DRU-510A firmware on it.

No, the DW-U10A is an OEM of the lower Sony Model, the DRU-500A. It has slower Rewriting speed, I think.

Ooops, yeah Dave is right.

DW-U10A = OEM DRU-500A
DW-U12A = OEM DRU-500AX
DW-U14A = OEM DRU-510A

I know it's possible to flash a DW-U10A with DRU-500A firmware.
But can you flash a DW-U10A with DRU-500AX firmware or even DRU-510A ?? or is there something other than the firmware limitation for speed writing.

Well since the DRU-500A and 500AX are essentially the same thing, I don't see why you couldn't flash the DW-U10A with the 500AX firmware.

Unfortunately, its not possible to flash it with the 510A firmware.

1) Faster DVD+RW writing speed: 4X in the 510A vs. 2.4X in the 500A

2)Faster DVD-ROM read speed.

What aboutmy second question, isn't any of you guys giving me your opinion?
Don't misunderstand I really apreciated where answers but you left me with one doubt left.
I can buy the Teac dv-w50a for around 250 Euros and the asus Cdrw 52X 40X 52 for 45Euros. But I'd rather spend 250 and get a future solution. Unless you tell me these formats +/- will soon be outdated.
Euros and Dollars are slightly the same value
