What Does Nero Verify Do?

I am very new to all this. My greatest concern is getting highest quality data DVDs/ As such, I alway do a verify in Nero after every burn. But what exactly does this step do? I also run CdCheck and wonder if they are doing the same thing. I cannot find any info on verify in the Nero online help. Thanks.

It compares the data burned to disc with the source.
